    Best Dog Ever!!!

Dan used to have a toad "girlfriend" on our driveway...always respectful...but there was always the thought that maybe he knew she wouldn't taste good. Unfortunately, the little toad's life was shortened by one of Bob's tires.

The years have passed and he's had a few toady friends in the backyard...always respectful...don't know how many since they all look the same to me.

Well...this morning...we brought increased value to the act of being respectful.

Dan has a potty trip every morning after breakfast. He sniffs his way around the back of the house to the corner under the deck where there's a roof. Every morning. Something has always left footprints for him to enjoy...sometimes more exciting than others.

This morning, he spots something interesting up where the ground hits the garage. Tip toes up....

Here we go...I don't see it at first...it's a baby bunny, cowering against the garage.

Dan sniffs. Politely...no excitement. And looks at me.

I nod, tell him "Good Boy...leave it." And he turns away to pursue his sniffing and find a good place to lift his leg.

He's always been good about ignoring wildlife off our property...he's been trained...and doesn't pay much mind to smaller creatures in our yard. But a baby bunny right under his nose?

    Yeah....Good Dog, indeed.

Especially impressive because he appears to have a fair amount of beagle in him and they were bred to hunt rabbits!

I know. He's interested in chasing the higher value prey in our yard...groundhogs and foxes...we are diligent about scaring away any that might be around before the dogs go out. Luckily enough, he hasn't caught up with any of those the few times that he's chased them. I secretly think he'd just be interested in sniffing butts, anyhow.

Sunnie I definitely don't trust. She's too slow nowadays but I've seen what she did to squirrels that she caught in the past. Let's just say they weren't going to be able to tell their grandchildren about their near misses.

You are lucky! My cardinal-eating dog (for those who don’t remember my post, he caught a cardinal mid air when he was about 5 months old and ate it) would never leave a baby bunny alone! Lately he has been obsessing over the chipmunks who have tunnels under my shed. He caught one once, but accidentally dropped it as he was trotting into the yard with his prize. It ran away to safety.

My Hershey ate a couple of baby bunnies...I witnessed them being swallowed whole....just as a puppy, though. My Baffle would lie in wait for the sparrows that seemed to have a flight route between specific bushes...not smart, birdies....also just swallowed whole.

Considering that my female Akita and Sunnie both have killed larger furry animals (Sunnie "just" a couple of squirrels, Kiku countless various creatures), I guess you could consider my backyard an abattoir.

My previous girl found a nest of bunnies once and ate a bunch of them too. She was young when she did it, but not a puppy. A few other times, she caught a chipmunk and dropped it after killing it. She also caught a muskrat once and ate it whole. Ug. You really can’t blame them for doing what is in their nature though. Thankfully, those experiences were few and far between.
