I gave him a shampoo bath today and showered him down. still smells really doggy. at least I know he is clean, but other than that I heard this may be a reason to see a vet??? chili never really smelled like doggy this strong and any length of time. any ideas/thoughts?

What kind of shampoo did you use? Chloe has had occasional periods of smelling kind of funky that we linked to being wet for too long (swimming too many days in a row). Her skin always looked fine but we found the smell didn't really go away until we used an OTC medicated (anti-bacterial/anti-fungal) shampoo, so something might have been going on with her. Regular shampoo didn't help that much. Now we own a forced-air dryer so we just dry all of them off after they get home from swimming or bathing.

I’d check his collar- those can get incredibly stinky- and then his ears?

Oh, yeah, collar! When we had Molly, she rolled in a dead carp! She smelled so bad I almost lost it trying to bathe her! A 2nd bath didn't help that much & I finally got the idea to take her collar off & wash it, & on the underside it was just caked with dead fish goo! The only other thing I can think of is sometimes food can cause dogs to smell bad, but if Chili has stayed on his same food, I wouldn't think that would be it. Mine always seem to smell doggy when they are wet. Many years ago we had dog that started smelling really bad, & it took vet awhile to figure out that she had mange. It went on awhile, & she was losing hair....they didn't have the better meds they have now for it, so I seem to remember vet had to dip her.

Yep, collar, ears, anal glands. Check all those. Also, the more often they get wet the more they will stink. Cookie starts stinking every summer because he is swimming every day. In autumn when he sheds, he stops stinking.

Fragrant cleaning wipes help a bit to mask the smell.

I used some mild paul mitchell doogy cleanse shampoo. his ears are good, collar isnt worn in the house, and no clue what anal sacs even are ao looks like Im gonna schedule a vet appt next week. only issue chili has had lately is a cut/cracked paw which I have een putting neosporin on and making him wear a booty so he would stop licking his paw. chili doesnt get wet at all as I live in the desert. but smelling like wet dog is exactly whats going on.

Could it be that the wound on his paw got infected? Does the smell come from that spot?
