Do the parents have all the appropriate clearances? Given our breeds unfortunate genetic disease possibilities, that was one of the most important things in our search for a new family member. Obviously nothing is a 100% guarantee but those clearances also show the breeder is trying to provide puppies with long, healthy lives. IMHO

Did you take Jen up on her offer to look to make sure?

Since Chili had ED, why would you want to do this? Why support a breeder that doesn't care about the health of their puppies?

If they really aren't on OFA, they are most likely cutting corners elsewhere too. There are several genetic diseases that absolutely should be tested for, because affected offspring can be devastating. Such as Prcd-PRA, if the status of Neither parent is known, the parents could both be either, affected themselves, or carriers and their offspring could be affected and go blind in young adulthood, EIC and CNM and DM are nothing to be messed with either, not to mention TVD and hip and elbow dysplasia.

I havent asked the breeder any of the tests other than if they getting all their shots. both parents are akc registered and Jen is a great help/asset. we have communicated and I asked Jen to keep communications private via pm.

Just because I visit this site alot and own a lab doesnt mean Im up on all the right things to do. maybe I wont buy a puppy from this breeder. I do know I have looked all over the place and decided against buying online, having pup flown to me, driving cross country, timing of having great pups referred but timing horrible. 2-3 yr wait here locally, turned down for adoptions due to my fence not being 8 ft tall....

I will ask breeder about all these tests...but probably doesnt matter after the fact the pups already born. would my vet be able to test anything on the pups prior to purchase?

Please wait for a puppy from a reputable breeder. Those who breed with no regard towards the future health of the animals they produce shouldn't be supported. And no, most of the diseases can not be found in a simple Vet exam. These are specialized tests and are vitally important to future of Labradors.

Waiting is difficult when you are so ready for a new family member but think about the long term. Elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, cardiac disease, EIC, possible blindness are just a few of possibilities. Aside from the pain and disability these things cause, the financial end of these things are astronomical. Yes, you will pay more for a puppy from a reputable breeder but in the long run, you will pay less.

Voodoo, I hope you will take some of the comments/ input to heart. I hate to say much here anymore, but I will say this. You have to be your own (dog's) advocate. There are so many ignorant and sleezy breeders out there! Most of us who have been in the game really don't give a rip if we take a deposit for every puppy in the litter. I don't because I'd rather have the flexibility of putting the right pup w/ the right home. Ask yourself this... do you really think you are going to get the follow up communication from this breeder if they've already skipped all the health testing (which btw, runs close to $1000 per breeding dog now), microchipping, eye checks, well checks, etc?
If you do buy a pup, I hope you opt for insurance, however it's because of this type of breeder that insurance premiums will eventually be too costly for most of us. Feel free to pm me. Anne

Voodoo - I know it seems as if we are piling on you regarding this and I really hope you aren't taking it personally. Many of us remember what you went through with Chili and his elbows, and we just don't want to see you go through something like that again. I also know how hard you've been working to find a puppy or even a rescue, and what struggle it's been. I went through pretty much the same search when I lost my boy Bruce to an undetectable heart issue in December 2015. Even though Bruce's sire and dam had all applicable clearances, and I've know his breeders for almost 35 years, I still lost him. So even with the best due diligence, there really are no guarantees. As I was doing my search, I'd find what I thought was an acceptable breeder/litter of pups, only to find some clearances weren't done, or the breeders claims regarding performance titles just wasn't as they advertised. It was highly frustrating and at times I felt a bit hopeless.

I do want you to know that what ever decision you make I support you 100% and wish you all the best.

One of the very most important things to look for in a Breeder is if they do all the necessary health clearances. If they don't, they are not a reputable Breeder and if they don't, I would walk away.

Just my two cents...and please don't take it personally.
