    Separation Barking

I haven't posted much but I am here. Deleting an onslaught of asian spammer daily.

We have started to leave Ovi and Georgia on their own for short periods of time.

I have a camera that points outdoors but can listen indoors.

Ovie barks and howls alot when we are gone. He also does the same when my wife leaves and I am downstairs. I yell at him to come downstairs and he settles down and sleeps on the floor or couch beside me. He is still a little spastic, going up and down the stairs constantly.

Two days ago we were both away for work. My daughter checked in after a couple hours of alone time. I was home for lunch a couple hours later and my wife a couple after that. So a few two hour stints. He knocked down the baby gate to the basement and pooped in front of my couch. Legitimately he may have had to go or he was upset.

We really don't want to crate him as I feel it would be worse for him.

Any ideas on what to do? My wife was going to leave some clothes out for him to curl up on. We leave the tv on and Georgia is with him.
    Thanks Everyone!!

What worked for Honey's separation anxiety (only when Hershey wasn't home) was the original ThunderShirt concept (called an anxiety wrap). We also used a pheromone product (wall plug-in....very oily/messy....I'd recommend the collar version) where she slept. That was D.A.P....they still make it but I understand it's a different company and reviews are mixed. The anxiety wrap made a huge difference, though.

I never had any real success with behavioral training. The dogs were supposedly already used to being separated for walks when Honey changed.

Maybe try some rescue remedy and clothes with your smells. Classical music is calming to dogs. Maybe a big stuffed animal.

Perhaps he's still getting used to his new home's schedule. I've found it can take several months for everyone to adjust.

A little OT. Something I do when leaving, and coming home, is not make a big deal of it. When leaving I give a pat or two and say 'Guard the house.' When coming home I go about my business for a few minutes before acknowledging the dogs, this seems to make for a calmer return.

You could be right. We had a funeral yesterday and he seemed better. Today my wife had to drive her mom to TO so it was just us. I did some yard work and him and Georgia just lounged in the sun and we went for a walk. He was more calm.

    Thanks everyone!
