Any chance descending the stairs shifted his harness a bit and his skin/hair was being pinched?
We visited my Sis today and had to go down her hardwood stairs to the basement. Oban still had his harness on, I was beside him holding the leash as we descended. Halfway down he began to whimper. Two thirds of the way down he was outright crying and did not want to go further. I picked him up and carried him the rest of the way, fully expecting a hurt dog when I set him down. And he was FINE.
Very, very weird. Sis was downstairs because her kitchen is being renovated. Plus, she has that broken wrist but Oban was down with me before so he knows she's hurt. But things are upset at her house, maybe that upset him? During the rest of our visit he was moving around ok, went outside to pee, but we walked the garden way out to avoid the stairs up and not get in the way of the workmen.
It's several hours now, we're home, he still seems ok. But I am kind of worried about tomorrow morning, what will I find then. You know how these things can go. You know these Labs, they don't cry about nothing.

Hope it was nothing. Don't you think he'd have protested more when you picked him up had it been his back? And how much does that boy weigh that you're able to pick him up and carry him on the stairs? I lift mine in and out of my car but that's not walking any distance or going up or down stairs. Impressive!
I always massage mine when stuff like that happens. I feel for muscles with my thumbs and fingers along the back. in the neck and in the butt muscles to see if anything twitches or if the area bows away from me when I massage it. I find that this tells me quite a bit about what to continue to massage or hot or cold pack.
I hope it's nothing.
Really hope its nothing. Please let us know how he is in the morning
I did worry I'd hurt him by picking him up but we couldn't stay in the middle of the stairs. He weighs 67 pounds. He seems ok this morning, out for first pee and up and down our half stairs with no problem, up and off the bed with no problem. Weird.

If they could only tell us what's going on. It would make situations like this so much easier.
Hope it was just some mental stress, and nothing physical.
He had a good off leash walk today, up and down hills, splashing through wet areas, jumping logs, in and out of the jeep twice (boost in, lift out) and there's no sign of anything at all wrong in his movement or demeanour. Whew.

OMG. Oban is good but my Sis is in bad shape with her wrist. Had the cast changed this morning (it was not done properly, don't mess around with a fracture clinic nurse) and the break is so bad the Doc wants her off work till September. She also got confirmation that she broke her tailbone; she thought so. Maybe Oban knew one of his favourite people was in bad shape.
