Be careful with the Seresto flea collar

Scary story! A friend and his wife have a bunch of dogs, all of whom wear the Seresto flea collar without issue. But the jack russell was wrestling with one of the bigger dogs and got the collar off. The owners didn't notice at the time, but found the JR in the corner chewing on the collar, which they quickly removed and threw out. That night, the JR hopped off a piece of furniture like usual and her hind end collapsed. They brought her to the evet where x-rays confirmed the JR had swallowed a good bit of the collar. According to my friend, "those collars are made with a modified pyrethrin, which is a neurotoxin. Dogs normally are not very sensitive to it, which is why they can wear the collars with no problem for the most part. However, ingestion is another matter." The vet induced vomiting, gave muscle relaxants, and one seizure and three trips to the e-vet later, she seems to be doing fine. Whew!

So the cautionary tale- if your lab wears a Seresto collar and likes to wrestle, make sure they don't get a chance to turn the collar into a chew toy!

Yikes! That is really scary! One of my trainers insists on removing collars on any dogs that are playing, but this is so they don’t get caught up in each other’s collars and end up choking. I guess she has seen it happen. Never thought about this scenario though. Glad the pup is okay.

That is scary. I've discussed this with plenty of dog folks and know quite a few with multiple dogs who don't use them for this reason. For us, our guys don't chew on each other's necks and now that they are no longer puppies, don't chew on things other than food or toys, so I am okay with using it, but you do really have to know your dog and your risks.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this story... I've heard very positive things about the Seresto Collar...but I'm thinking it's not a good idea if your Lab is a chewer...
