    I did it

The house has been so quiet without Benelli and Gauge misses his buddy and tho I'm not ready right now I know that I want another lab in the near future. Not to replace Benelli but to fill the void he's left in our family. So I contacted a breeder today to establish a relationship prior to purchasing and I know I would have to wait anyway as she only breeds 1 sometimes 2 litters a year. We set up an appt to see her next month when I'm on vacation to check out her dogs ask questions and just to get to know each other. Any questions I should be asking I know she does health checks but any particular names I should ask that she does. We arnt even thinking to add til fall or spring of next year as I would like Ruger to be at least 2 before adding any another.

Every time I get a new puppy it seems like there are new tests recommended! Hopefully Jen or Shelley or Anne will see this or you might send them a PM. Good luck with your search and good thing you’re starting early!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

For the both parents of your litter/puppy
You want passing OFA evaluations of Hips and Elbows
A current eye exam performed by an boarded ACVO (American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist)
A color doppler echocardiogram performed by a boarded ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) Cardiologist (both parents not just the sire) to clear the heart of TVD (Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia) and general heart health and no cardiac abnormalities.
At least one parent DNA tested clear/normal of EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse), Prcd-PRA (the type of Progressive Retinal Atrophy, that Labradors can have)
The above is the bare minimum, it would be nice to also see DNA testing to be clear (Both parents!) of the Dilute gene, (this is foreign to Labradors and indicate another breed was introduced, most likely a Weimaraner), DM (Degenerative Myopathy), HNPK (Hereditary Nasal Para Keratosis) CNM (Centro Nuclear Myopathy)
Also, make sure the puppies stay with their litter mates, dam and breeder until (at least) 8 weeks.

Here is one of my girls OFA record for reference and what you want to see, she is qualified for a CHIC number

living in the northeast you will have a ton of options...so you can be as picky as you want if you can handle 500mi radius. if you want a west coast vacation, talk with shelley...she impressed me with her knowledge/pups....
