    4th of July - what's your plan?

I kinda hate the 4th of July holiday around here. The dogs are OK about it. Presto is not a huge fan of the noise. Instead of moaning and groaning about it, I decided to skip town. The city I live in does not allow fireworks, but the law is now adhered to nor enforced. Since I actually live in a city - urban area, not the core - the police have many other things to be doing (including tending to house fires caused by said fireworks). I learned my options were as follows, and I thought I'd share:

    • Camp at a National Park that is well-tended (camp hosts, strict rules, etc.)
    • Head to a city/county that has strict rules that are enforced and stay in a dog-friendly hotel
    • Go to Canada (this was an option, but I'm heading up there in August for a dog event so decided against it)
    • Stay in a nearby airport hotel (they are supposed to have soundproofing and some, like mine, are far from populated areas)

The boys and I are headed to the beach. A sleepy little town that has a strict ordinance against fireworks and the cops don't have much else going on, so they spend time enforcing the law. It's costing me an arm and a leg, but I think it'll be worth it. I have my neighbors watching my house for any fires and will wet down my roof and other property really well before I go. There were two house fires in my neighborhood last year from fireworks and one brush fire literally across the street from me, which sounds small but it was a big deal as it spread incredibly fast and took three of us with hoses to put out while waiting for the fire department.

    Be careful out there!

We'll be beaching it up, too. They're not supposed to do fireworks in that town but there are often some firecrackers or bottle rockets around. You can see big fireworks farther down the beach in other towns. The noise doesn't bother Lark. Henry hasn't had any July 4 or fireworks before but he's so chill about everything I don't think the faint booming will bother him. Our neighborhood here doesn't have people out shooting off fireworks, too many oldsters and probably mostly illegal anyway.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

We had the same situation for years. Fortunately the kid grew up and lost interest.

We'll be home, hoping that this will be the usual 4th....we can hear nearby sanctioned displays and not too many of our neighbors will be setting them off....and not one like we had a few years ago....about 3 extended weeks of neighbor stuff (which freaked out the dogs and initiated their problems, not just with fireworks but now also thunderstorms and high wind). I've come to hate any holiday that inspires the locals to set off fireworks. They're illegal here but the police stopped responding to complaints a year or two before that blow-out 4th that totally messed up the dogs. People know they can get away with anything nowadays.

    Enjoy your holiday....be safe!

    Voodoo.....good luck with Ziti.

We used to just hear muzzle loaders going off as fireworks were illegal here the big ones anyway, kids could still find the little firecrakers which were bad enough. Then several years ago in all their infinite wisdom WV decided it would be a good money maker to leagalize fireworks. So we stay home now because of the dogs and cats along with the idiots that set off the big fireworks that leave ash and debre all over the property.

Our neighborhood is insane with fireworks. Neighbors get together and have thousands of dollars worth of stuff blowing up. I am not a fan. In the morning our neighborhood has an old fashioned bike parade which Macy and I will walk in with her 4th of July kerchief. The day itself is still up in the air. Sometimes we head to the pool if we feel like fighting for a chair. They have games and music, etc. (and cocktails). At night, we have the best fireworks in the area at our golf club. We get to watch from the driving range so we often bring friends over to that.

None of my dogs have ever been bothered by fireworks so we will be hanging at home. The local park will have a huge display about 1 mile away on Saturday night (the 29th), and neighbors will most likely be randomly firing them off all week.

Our only added wrinkle is we are babysitting another CCI pup (different from the last one) for this upcoming weekend - hoping she doesn't have issues with them either but between being bred for stability and having been raised on a college campus in West Philadelphia, she should be okay with loud noises. We'll be home and keeping an eye on her though.

Nothing special here though my dogs do take notice at the weird sounds w/ the display. I just play it down and there has never been an issue.
