There's a "made for TV" movie in there somewhere.
For over a decade, we've been plagued by neighbors on either side of us doing things on our property without our consent. I'm talking farming, cutting down trees, throwing away no trespassing signs, etc.
Last year I sent a certified letter to everyone involved, including the people they were hiring, the town and the police stating that I would call the police if I caught any of them on our property for any reason. We knew that the guy they were hiring was part of the problem but didn't know why. Our attorney knew him and belonged to the same church and took an unusually protective attitude toward him.
Long story short, it turns out that the guy they were hiring is part of a family who used to be a really big deal in this town as in a street is named after this family. One son still lives here and is the president of the company they own but he has always been apologetic for his father's behavior. Last year I put my foot down and said that wasn't good enough so I sent the letter. This year, no one showed up to hay either of our neighbors' properties and I am now at peace.
My husband suggested I do some research. Here's what I found out.
My mother in law knew the family. One of the brothers was beating his wife back in the late '60s, early '70s. My mother in law and a group of women from the church tried to stop it after the family's house burned down, getting the wife and kids away from the father when they didn't have anywhere to live. That did not go over well.
One of our neighbors is a boarding school. The guy who founded it passed before my mother in law passed. When he passed, this family took over the boarding school's haying and our other neighbor's fields as well. Then they just started mowing all of our stuff down, taking down trees, you name it.
It took me the longest time to figure out why no one was doing anything to stop this. Turns out one of the brothers was the Chair of the Agricultural Division in our town among other things. He passed last April.
I guess we're finally rid of these people. Time will tell.
There's a "made for TV" movie in there somewhere.
I hope peace continues.
