It is hard to believe that our little baby Henry is one year old today! He's smart, calm, loving, happy and everything we could have asked for. We spent his birthday week at the beach where he got to swim in the ocean on days when the waves were calm. He discovered that he could actually go a little deeper into the water so that he was swimming, not just wading. He learned that retrieving a bumper from the water was tons of fun and surprisingly, if both dogs were off their leashes when the bumper was tossed out, Lark would defer to Henry to bring it back. And Larky is a girl who thinks getting that bumper is her mission in life. We don't spend enough time at the beach to know whether I can train each one to go only when we tell them it's their turn. Henry's Mom, Grandmom, Aunt and other relatives each have a specific ball that they like to retrieve. Maybe I can get a white bumper and teach one to get only the white one and one to only get the orange one.
Here's a photo from the first day he came home and one from this week. I think his face still looks like a puppy but clearly, he's done some growing in the past year!
Happy Birthday Henry!

Happy Birthday Henry!!
For our girls, we use mostly the same color bumpers. On the first throw it's first come first claim (usually Chloe gets it), then we toss another one until that's been claimed (mostly by Sass) and then the final one usually goes to Cookie because she will defer to the other two. Once they each have "their" bumper though, they are usually pretty good about only going after theirs. Every so often someone will steal, usually when they didn't mark their own well enough, and when that happens they end up switching, but it all works out. Once the initial excitement of getting to the lake and getting a bumper has died down, they're also pretty good about understanding "this one's for Chloe ... this one's for Sass .... etc) and waiting for their name to be called. It's just in the initial frenzy to get a bumper, any bumper that they don't listen so well .... despite being titled Obedience dogs, LOL.
