    Breeders

Sometime next year I want to get another lab. I want a yellow female with a black nose. I prefer American breed since Parker is American himself, but I am not too picky on that.

Anyways my real question is how do I find a reputable breeder? I live in Westchester county NY and prefer someone sorta local so I can visit the pups as they grow.

Can anyone help me out with this? If you know a really good breeder that is not local but ships I may consider but I would rather want a local.

    Thanks Labers

Find a club near you using this search tool:
Regional Club Directory - The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc.

Each club's website should have a directory with some websites or even litter listings. You'll have to go through each and see if they have pups available and make contact.

You will be looking for someone that does something with their dogs and does all the recommended clearances.

This link might help too: Selecting A Puppy - The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc.

I'd also narrow down what you mean by "American". If you mean a more moderate bench bred dog, get that. If you mean a dog from field lines, get that. There is a world of difference between the two.... So make sure you know what you are getting yourself into!

Regardless, like Jen said, get a dog from a breeder that does ALL clearances, competes with their dogs, etc. Health AND temperament should be your first priority.

If you're truly interested in a field bred labradors, you should check out the litter listings on 301 Moved Permanently but like mentioned above, please know what you're getting into with a dog of that energy level and need to work.

Parker you live in my area! I can tell you from experience that (back in 2011) alot of the breeders in our area were only breeding once/twice a year out of "hobby" (stated on their websites) hobby = EXPENSIVE alot of the time. However, you want to make sure they are doing all the testing and preventative care on their breed stock. If they're charging hundreds/thousands and have no medical paperwork showing any medical care and/or no information on lineage... RUN! Don't support a yard tard breeder.

Here's a nice easy explanation... English or American Lab?

What do you plan to do with the dog?

I just want another companion lab. And if she has a good temperament train her to be a therapy dog. I also want her to be a buddy to my dog now. I don't plan on showing or hunting with my labs. I just want em to be part of the family.

    I don

How much does a puppy cost? Purchase price, adoption fees, discounts, expensive puppies, cheap puppies, and a bunch of other words. | Ruffly Speaking

Two good articles, and if you google similar terms, you can read until the cows come home. My opinion, find a nice breeder who shows their dogs with the intention of keeping one back for themselves to show, does the clearances, and lets you spend the afternoon with mom and any of their other dogs. You shouldn't see dad because breeders looking to produce a nice litter to go forward on will find themselves a nice boy to use, almost NEVER do they actually own this dog themselves. Don't get caught up on the American/English terms.
