Perhaps the husky is dog aggressive? Maybe over protective of his house?

Would do the same here. While Mardi cannot go many places, Archie sure can and does. The only place I do not take him is DD's house since Nicky is not well socialized. Since Mardi stays home, we don't leave her for extended periods of time. It's just not fair to her, she has no control over her infirmities. Love me, Love my dogs.
Good for you. That's weird.
I just don't do anything during the week unless it's really quick or involves the dogs. Driving an hour each way on a weeknight would probably not fly for me, either. I don't expect people to be OK with my dogs coming over, even if they have dogs of their own. I politely decline and thank them for the invitation, but say that logistically it won't work with the dogs. If the event is important to me or to whoever is inviting me, I will try to make it. Planning ahead is vital. I will go if I can leave work early and the event doesn't start until later. Or, if I don't have an option (work), I have the dog walker come by two or more times. It's not ideal, but it's also very rare. I don't feel bad for declining invitations due to the dogs, and most of my friends and family know that I have responsibilities, so they either ask me ahead of time so I can make arrangements (get home from work early, etc.) or we make plans on the weekends.
There are certain dogs that aren't allowed at my house because they are destructive. It's not the dog's fault, it's the owner's fault. And sometimes it's just because the dogs are over-excited and go a little crazy when they are together and it's too much for me and for my house. I am direct when I tell them that their dog can't be at my house. It hasn't damaged any friendships. In fact, my one friend whose dog was banned, in turn, banned my dogs because of the Lab hair everywhere!
I was thinking the same thing as KenZ71... it might not be your dog but theirs. She may not want to deal with her dog's issues when she is busy with a party. Her loss.
I don't go out on week nights either unless the dogs come with and my family has learned to accept it. They are crated all day (or home alone) so they need me in the evening. Sporadically something comes up I have to go to - those days I may have the dog walker come for longer or make plans ahead of time (take some time off work, work from home, ect. etc.)
BUT it's the other person's house, it is their rigth to not want my dog(s) there even in a crate. I respect that. But they need to respect that deciding on when they invite me over I may say no because of that

I don't decline invitations because the dogs aren't allowed but my dogs don't spend the whole day alone (they go to work with my fiancé) so I understand not wanting to leave them home after they've been alone all day.
I also understand someone not wanting dogs over at their house. Not everyone has the same rules for their dogs that we do and it's annoying when friends bring their dogs over and they climb all over the sofas, jump up on people, counter surf, and bug the crap out of my dogs.

I completely understand that!!! And if that is the case in this situation, I would so rather she tell me that! The fact that she gave me a quick excuse is what was hard. If they had said "oh, we dont want ollie (their husky) to go crazy, or we just dont allow other dogs over, etc." I would have been fine with this! Just the lie and evade the situation. Thats what left a sour taste in my mouth.

That's frustrating! I would prefer to stay home too, especially after a long day away.

I'm thinking she doesn't want a house or yard full of dogs on her birthday and that because it's her birthday and her house she can call it. Perhaps she also felt it too difficult to explain the reason and was reluctant to inadvertently offend.
I understand when friends ask this even those with dogs, many also don't like the energy and enthusiasm of a young lab. I hate going to houses where eyes are rolling and stern faces are present because my lab is being a lab, especially when they imply it is misbehaving and compare it to another dog which is a senior or different breed. So likewise, I decline offers too. Love me, love my dog!
