I would not recommend a herding breed. Nor would I recommend a high strung breed like a JRT.

Boxer, wire hair terrier, English setter, bull terrier, Gordon setter, standard poodle, would all be good...

I don't know if a beagle would be a good fit. They bark a lot! Our neighbors used to have a beagle, it never stopped barking. So I don't think it would be a good fit in an apartment.

Someone mentioned greyhounds. My SIL fosters greyhounds, they are really very quiet dogs and enjoy retirement and being adopted. Hers love to go on long walks, they need exercise to keep them settled. I am not sure how they would be hiking rough terrain, that is why I do agree with others a lab would be a better fit for that situation. My niece lived in Boston in a small sized apartment with 2 greyhounds. They never made a peep. Neighbors didn't even know she had dogs! LOL!

However they would have to be cat tested. SIL said there are many greys who don't care about cats, but others have the high prey drive to chase small animals. That may be the downfall with adopting a greyhound.

    Good luck to your friend!

I agree about not being sure if a Beagle would be a good fit. My friends who have Beagles often complain to me about not being able to stop them from barking and howling at all hours. I bet their neighbors just love them.

A smaller sized Lab or Lab mix sounds ideal in this case.
