When Mardi sleeps she really sleeps solid. Sometimes I'll stand over her to make sure she is breathing. Paranoid Mom.
Archie, he always has an eye half open.
last night right before my husband and i went to bed we found about his cousin who died of a pulmonary embolism... she was only 25. heartwrenching.
i think we both went to bed feeling uneasy (as well as him feeling particularly sad, obviously)
I woke up at 2am when I rolled over onto Lincoln. he didn't budge. he normally sleeps next to my hip under my duvet when we have the AC on (spoiled) It was so weird that he was at the end of the bed like that. I sat up and looked him. normally he curls in a ball... he was just... sprawled out.
I touched him and he felt cold (from the AC, obviously, in retrospect)
i started shaking him.... nothing. REALLY started shaking him... NOTHING. now i'm grabbing his head and ruffling his ears hard... NOTHING. now i'm practically barrel rolling him i'm pushing at him so hard. NOTHING. i'm just about to start hyperventilating when he yawns, opens his eyes, and looks at me. gives me a little doggie smile, gets up, stretches, finds his bone on the bed, settles back down and starts chewing.
i was almost in tears. Maggie has been a hard sleeper before and I've woken up with a similar fear. but i swear this was worse.
can they sleep through ANYTHING!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
(but i'm sure if i had tried to a candy bar in bed it would be a whole other story... hahaha)

My corgi sleeps like a rock, you can pick her up and move her and she still barely wakes up.
My senior pom has been scaring the crap out of me lately. She doesn't respond to my voice, no response to any noise. I have to nudge her to wake her up. Its tough watching them grow old
My yellow boy Mags got to be a mostly light sleeper when he got old, almost like he was afraid he wouldn't know whats going on if he was really deep sleep (he was deaf), especially after my choc boy passed.
Keep an old treat bag in the bedroom. Next time you have that fear, open the treat bag, they spring to life then no matter what state of sleep.
But yeah depending on the tiredness level and especially with cool air they can pass out and choose to stay passed out no matter what you do.
Know how it feels - used to have the same thing with Lynn. A few times I was in a cold sweat not sure she was still alive; checking if she was breathing, checking her heart beat and then, all of a sudden, she woke up really surprised to see me there almost in tears. What a relief.

When bacon is sleeping well, he sleeps hard. But when I want to sleep hard, he tends to be restless and change positions in his crate 8 billion times a night.

Maxx sleeps like that, I swear a bomb could go off next to him and you would be lucky to see him open an eye. He also snores, loudly. He sleeps like this between 10 PM and 6 AM and then he is ready for breakfast and to start his day. Yesterday he jumped in the pool at 6:45 AM and looked at me like I was crazy when I voiced my displeasure at having a wet dog so early in the morning. Sometimes you just have to laugh...

Ozzy - 10/2002 - 06/2011 - Rest well my sweet boy. You are forever remembered, forever missed, forever in my heart.
Fran and Nikki have been sleeping hard recently. We can all leave the room and one or the other will be completely passed out. I do think there is a correlation to allergy season and taking meds though. As in they haven't been sleeping well then they get relief and pass out. But Nikki is 10 and Fran is 11 1/2 so you never know.
