Question resue puppy health drama >_<

Long story short: We a adopted a puppy ...she's a spunky wonderful girl who came down with kennel cough.....cough has since cleared.......Rocky who has never been sick ever, now has kennel cough and has been coughing for 2-3 weeks now (it's not getting worse) his coughing spells are starting to "space out" a little more....they aren't so "one-after-another" like they were originally .... Should i panic with rocky?? Or does he just need to let this annoying cough just run it's course?

Oh and now Xena (rescue pup wallet killer. lol) has been diagnosed with localized demodex mange. >_< anyone ever have to battle this??... she only has 2-3 spots and it isn't traveling the body (knock on wood!)

Any info would be appreciated. In the 3 weeks we've had her we've blown over 1000.00 in vet/care bills. We can't afford anymore vet visits this month.

New member, and truly have no answers. Hopefully those who have experience will give you some insight. Just wanted to say, good for you for rescuing and understand that with rescues, hidden health problems can come with them. Thankfully, knock on wood, our rescue Lilly has no health problems (yet). Only manners need to be worked on, which so far have not affect the wallet. Will when puppy classes come, but nothing compared to what you are dealing with.

Fingers crossed for your Xena and Rocky.

kennel cough often runs thru the family. some vets treat, some don't. so i would question the vet on that one.

and demodox sometimes in due to a compromised immune system. there are some holistic treatments, (brain not working now) where they actually just leave it alone, depending how far spread. i think you can look it up with a google search but again, call the vet and see. did the vet do a scraping?

What a mess for you! I have dealt with k/c once, years ago. If I remember correctly, both of the dogs I had at the time got it and it was over in about 10 days. What did your vet say about Rocky's cough? The demodex manger I have never dealt with. I think I remember reading it can be a bit difficult to get rid of which would translate to $$$$ in my mind. I really hope I am remembering incorrectly, you have spent a lot of money in one month! Good thoughts that your 2 are on the mend and healthy very soon!

Congratulations on the new pup! How old is she? Given that she just came through rescue, illness, probably vaccines, home change, etc., the stress might be a bit much for her, leading to demodex taking a temporary hold in a few spots. Localized demodex like this is not usually a worry; the immune system will handle it as she matures, usually. After all, now she is getting great care and great food.

As for the cost, did you by any chance get pet insurance when you adopted her? Petfinder offers a discount the first month on rescues listed there, and it can be well worth it if they came through rescue with an illness from exposure during her homeless days. There is no responsible breeder with health clearances on her parents standing behind her. If you have the insurance, just follow directions on getting reimbursed. It may be too late to cover her current illnesses, but it could help with any non respiratory and nondermal issues in the future.

Cherry had demodex mange while we we're fostering her and she was on a straight liquid ivermectin given orally for three months. You can imagine my surprise when she came up light heart worm positive after the three month period was over since that is heart worm preventative. Since she was light positive we treated with Heartguard for six months and she came up heart worm negative. It isn't contagious and it never returned but I've known a few dogs that it did return. My understanding it is caused by stress. As for the kennel cough you can give the plain Robitussin capsules to speed up the healing process but if it gets worse another vet visit may be best. Good luck!
