Please help us raise funds - OSPCA Friends for Life! Walk

I very rarely ask for help. This is one of those very rare occasions.

As long time members may remember I adopted my ACDx Achilles (Achilles the heeler) from a central Texas shelter in 2006. He was picked up as a stray, an adult estimated to be six years old. He'd been at the shelter for a long time, had some lookers but no takers. The ACO and the volunteers believed in his adoptability. Despite that he was probably running out of time. Then I came along, adopted him, and brought him home on his 363rd day at the shelter.

Here we are in 2014 and Chilidog is still my and Fayes' treasured companion. Why? The busy, harried, underfunded shelter, its ACO and its volunteers, gave him a chance.

On Sunday September 21 Achilles and I will pay back, and pay forward, that chance. We plan to walk in the Chatham-Kent Branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (OSPCA) Friends for Life! Walk. It's a fund-raiser for the OSPCA, which does very important work. They are the organization in Ontario responsible for investigating animal abuse and cruelty. They also provide education services and of course, shelter animals waiting for adoption and their forever home. We plan to walk and will raise funds to help them continue their work.

I set an ambitious goal - $300 - and the 21st is not far away.I will deeply appreciate it if you will make a donation in our name. Please go to Our Page to donate online. What an awesome event. Like there, our local AC is very underfunded. It's the local community that keeps them going with all sorts of donations; sheets, blankets, beds, treats and even food. They are budgeted with enough to euthanize a dog/cat, but only do so if the animal is seriously injured/ill or vicious (yes, we are in an area where dog fights are not uncommon). The budget does not extend far enough to give IV fluids to a dehydrated animal which could save it's life. The girls (who are part of the police department) use their own money many times. They also hold an annual event to raise money and it's a blast to attend.

Here's a photo of Achilles at the last Walk. It was in May, a warm, humid, and almost still day. Most of the walk was in the sun. When we returned to a shady spot we stopped to rest for a while.
