I understand that and that was why I told the OP she somehow needed to figure out how to educate the buyer BEFORE they started shopping.

Maybe you can enlighten us as to why were you in such a rush to get your puppy? Why is anyone on a timeline to get a puppy for that matter?

My gosh, I bet I took longer to decide on my TV last fall (about the same price as a well bred lab puppy) and I'm not counting on that TV to last nearly as long as any of my dogs nor does it have near the "overall value" or function.

I talked with 4 different breeders in the state I live in and 3 out of the 4 said all their pups were reserved for the next year and I could get on the list for fall 2015. the 4th breeder said they had 1 spot for their next litter expected spring 2014 but I wouldnt be able to get a chocolate. The state I live in isnt a very populated state. So based off of my location and the supply of breeders in the area that I was aware of, I searched for what I wanted on the internet. The broker site I used had flashy images on its website with celebrity pics of happy customers and a huge selection of pups of all breeds. It was very professional looking and answered all my questions like health, pedigree, even a warranty. If chili hadnt had his surgery/elbow problem I would of been 100% pleased...I love my Chili doggie, so I guess it doesnt matter...but I would of rather bought local and established a relationship with the breeder. Now since I bought off the internet I have a relationship with my vet and these forums.

edit add: I guess the bottom line is that I thought I was getting the best puppy I could, but in reality I didnt know what to look for. All I saw was a beautiful picture, a price I could afford, a 6 generation CH pedigree, and a guarantee. since I never bought a pet before, this all sounded like a dream purchase and stopped my research cause I found my perfect pup I couldnt find in the state I lived in. thats what sold me. I didnt know or see any red flags. what could go wrong?

Well then you are a great resource to the OP. You (hopefully) know what not to get sucked into in the future. You mention a 6 gen CH pedigree... really??? On a brokerage site??? Did you ever go to the www.offa.org site to see if parents and grandparents had hip and elbow clearances at minimum? And those are bare minimum....

I still don't understand why breeders from surrounding states would be out of reach for you. Had you asked here, I'm sure many would have helped you. I have a couple good friends who breed in AZ and would have been happy to refer you.

two things that seems to get people looking for a buyer is "AKC registered" and "x generation of pedigree" and "meet the parents". these three things make it sound legit. registered, well that means they ar ea good breeder to register their dogs (and sometimes they say the KENNEL is registered with AKC). Pedigree - well there you go, we have all the history of the dogs going back (when in fact it's just a list of names).

I think some things you need to be careful to add on a list as a "must have". Like 2 litters per day (what if for some reason a totally legit breeder had 3-5 that year? That automatically makes them BAD?), both parents on site (this is a BIG one rescues and random people say), checks your references (not sure how many breeders do this, won't say this makes them unethical).

STick to the high end stuff. Clearances, proves their dogs, i like member of the breed club of their area, breeds "few" per year and doesn't breed a big number of breeds (I hesitate to give a number as I think some good breeders DO have 2 breeds) and maybe screens buyers prior to selling, requires that the dog back at any time, sells on limited contract and is supportive throughout the dogs life.

A new thing I started seeing rescue people say about "good breeders" is they require a spay/neuter by X age and will take the dog back if not. I found that too simplistic (and trying to get a dog back would be very hard).

I learned alot after I already bought Chili. They sent me the pedigree after the purchase. Once receiving the pedigree, the red flags started popping up. I learned alot from this experience. And I dont recommend brokers or pet stores...but like I said earlier, I didnt know.

one thing I will add, the broker I used really has no idea of anything, they are just a middleman business. they set up the website and relay info/payment. they do make mistakes also. when I asked where the puppy was coming from they told me florida, when I received the puppy it came from missouri. the few questions I did ask, I had read about puppy mills and remember missouri being towards the top of the list, so when they told me florida, I figured it wasnt a puppy mill. my point is there can be a lot of deception when buying a pup if you arent careful. even on the pedigree, some of those parents arent AKC champions even tho it says so on the pedigree.

Wow. Thanks for posting. Btw, looking on OFA, his sire unfortunately failed hips when tested.
    Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
and then bred him to a Fair whose mom likely failed OFA hips since she shows elbows, but not hips. Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
At least there are elbows on OFA....

Yes, I called on an ad in our "Giant Nickel" or such a few years ago, and she was obviously a broker. Would not even discuss pedigree until you committed to buy the puppy! She strung me along (as did I w/ her) until she finally caught on that I was a breeder.

lot of deceit went on with my Chili, when I challenged the broker after the fact(remember guarantee/warranty)? they offered to take him back and give me another for a price/discounted. whats done is done and the only reason I post is to help others. I figure by the time chili is older he will be deaf, blind, cancer, crippled with a bad heart and whatever else can go wrong...just because thats been my luck lately.
