I remember you posting once that when you got out your camera, Chili knows it's play-time. You could do this in addition to Lauranj's advice. And then you can post the pics How he's back to his old self soon.

This happened to Charlie a couple of months ago. He is a scaredy cat to begin with.
We got home from being out and about and he just started barking..... at everything. Gave him a Kong to settle down, he was not having it.
Then as we started our normal evening walk, he would bark at the lamp post.....barking at it LOUD. We just ignored it, and he got over it after a couple of days.
I also think it has something to do with some critter that he heard....at that hour of the morning, it's very probable. Foxes and coyotes (around here) are on the prowl right around then, calling. Our two go nuts in the house because of fox calls between 4 and 4:30 practically every morning (worse in mating season). And all of the coyotes I've seen over the years have been early a.m. sightings (including the pack that was on our neighbors' front lawn about three years ago when I was still taking Dan out for his morning potty (4:15 ish) in our front yard...that made me switch to the back, although it would be nothing for coyote to get over our 5-foot fence...we have full spotlight coverage for the backyard and I feel safer with that).
Dan is noticeably scared when the scent of coyote is around (witnessed when we came across a fresh deer kill; Sunnie, on the other hand, wanted to follow the coyote trail, not investigate the deer).
My Hershey used to hackle up and look really nervous if there was a coyote in the vicinity of where we were walking (never knew exactly what was spooking him until I saw a coyote one morning near where it happened).
I think he is back to normal now, he went in the backyard and grabbed a few rays of sunshine this morning. I still dont know what it was, but I am happy he got over it.
I've heard some pretty creepy animal sounds outside our house, too- foxes, some little animal that's been caught by a fox or owl, who knows, but the noise is enough to make my hair stand on end. So far it doesn't seem to bother my beasts- I think I'm the one who doesn't want to go outside if I've heard sounds like those and my dogs don't cut me any slack. Get out here, Mom! I get over it once I see there's nothing there to get me.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Obviously something spooked him, I always "listen" to my dogs, he is trying to tell you something. If this type of behavior is completely out of the norm for him I would do my best to make the "scary area" a really fun place. Hide and seek, nosework or agility type games would be great options.

Glad he's back to normal. It's times like this when you really wish they could tell you what's going on.
