    Normal reaction?

Jake is 1 year old this week, not sure of just what day. This weekend he totally shocked me with what he did at the doggy park as well with other things he does. The park was not very busy but there was a Brittny or sheppard type dog fetching a tennis ball for its owner and Jake watched him for awhile then ran along side of him a few times. Jake nevers goes after any other dogs ball, he was just watching and running. The other dog was a bit jealous and chased him off but jake still watched him for a wihile. That owner started heading out of the park and Jake played with a few other dogs, then we started to leave too. We were out of sight from the Brittny's owners when we started out but I seen them near the gate talking with some people coming in and they were stopped. Jake was running near the the lake edge when he found a tennis ball and he imediately ran to the group who were stopped and talking and thier dogs standing there with them. Jake ran into the middle of them and dropped the ball and turned and walked toward me. One of the ladies told him he forgot his ball as he he was leaving them and I told her that jake didn't bring a ball. We all watched in amazement for a few seconds then they left. I tried to get Jake to take the ball and he would not pick it up, which is just the opposite of what he would with his ball. Has anyone seen this in any other dogs

I think he thought they forgot it, when he is around other dogs he won't even play with his own toys or balls, he just watches them

It really does sound as if he put some thought into that...and wanted to show off his smarts.

Really think that it just shows how smart, generous and considerate he is, especially for a lab

Instead of a Labrador Retriever he wants to be a Labrador Deliverer. They are the best kind, you don't wear out your throwing arm. Really, never heard of such a thing, but if he makes friends doing that sounds like a behaviour worthy of praise.

Never seen that behavior either. But Jake should have gotten a BIG hug and Kudos for being such a good boy!!! AND.. a SMART OBSERVANT boy too! "That dog had a ball... They have no ball now... They need his ball!"

My 3 year old, Sunshine, would NEVER pick up a toy another dog was playing with, unless she was playing with it and the other dog 'stole' it from her. She will then just follow the other dog and pace circles around them until they drop the toy then leave.

Thanks for the great replies and Larador deliverer is perfect for Jake we play games with him taking things to my wife in the other room and she keeps them until I am done messing with her; usually they are pretty wet when she gets them, but Jake always wants something to do around us and it gives me a few minutes with him gone so I can get some work done. In the stores that let him in, he takes all of the bones, chew toys and canned dog food to the checker. One time the lane he usually goes too was closed and I told him next register and he turned around and went to the next one and waited in line. He leads me on the leash and I have to tell him left or right gong down the isles, it seems that I can't break him of that.

Excellent! Now is the time to start linking commands together. "Jake? Go to the bedroom (any other allowed room), "get this item" and bring it to Mama (or whatever name)." Now, you are not handing him something he has to go find an item and bring it to someone else. She can return the favor! "Jake, Daddy needs 'this item', I think it is in the living room." He will be happy as a clam at high tide he is doing something for you and you are happy he is busy and not l@@king for something to do!!!

We did this with my first black gal, when she NEEDED something to do. At small outdoor festivals, she would be at the campsite and 'fidgety' there, wanting me. I would be on stage picking, or waiting to go on. My sisters would give her something and ask her to give it to me. She would RUN around the event, l@@king for me, nose down. When she found me, she more than a few times..., RAN up on stage and stood by my side all happy tailed, with an adult beverage (or other item) in her mouth. The crowd would be laughing!!!! I would take it from her, thank her with a BIG HUG, then give her something to bring back, change, a piece of paper... anything, it didn't matter. She was just happy she had a "job" to do. And yes, things are a bit 'slimy' when you get them. It is a lab thing that only a lab person can appreciate.

We turned it into a great "parlor trick". I could introduce her to someone new "Sweetheart, this is Bob." Later ask her to go get an item and bring it to "Bob". She would get the item and bring it to the person. GREAT way to keep an active lab happy and busy!!! So have fun with it!!!!
