Your dog doesn't need a coat, return it and use the money to buy the dog some bones.
Ok, I'm guilty of this. I always had a blanket obsession when I had horses. Now that the horses are sold, Archie has a horse blanket. I couldn't resist. He barely ever wears it, but on the really cold -30 days I pull it out - mostly for my own enjoyment. We have this one:

Ram has a rain coat that he wears when it's really pouring. He always prefers to shake inside the house, and I don't have a mud room and he sleeps with me. See, it's totally justified.
I'm having a laugh reading this. Your weather in North Carolina is absolutely tropical compared to ours up here in the great white north. Even up here, we don't see many labs wearing coats.
I got Sam a fleece jacket as a camping just in case thing. Sometimes we camp in weather much colder than what the dogs are used to so I wasn't sure if he might get cold in the tent overnight in temps much lower than he experiences here where it's relatively mild in the winter. He has worn it once so far, but didn't really need it. I just wanted to be sure. He doesn't have the really good thick undercoat of other dogs I've had.
I think the only time I ever saw Jules shiver from being cold was when it was way below zero outside, in the snow, with cold winds.
