Cattle dogs playing (lots of photos)

The other day Stella invited Achilles to play. It's been some time since this happened. I happened to have the camera nearby and turned it on. I was shooting blind, not using the viewfinder or the LCD, simply tripping the shutter. Thought I'd share a few photos from the sequence.

Stella's already started the show. Achilles launched himself off the deck and she's watching him.

Leapin Lizard? No, that's Leapin' Chili. He leaps off the deck.

    Back onto the deck.

Off again. Great butt shot Andrew.

Achilles thought about throwing a hip check but . . .

    Circles around.

    Dancing dogs.

    Off into the yard.

Back onto the deck to do si do.

And another turn around the yard.

    Now the hip check.

My favourite photo. Looks fierce but it's all in play.

    Settling down, play session over.

It was good to see them play. They don't do it much these days, possibly because they are seniors. Stella's 11. Achilles is who knows? Perhaps 10, perhaps 12. I could wish they were younger. That's pointless. Loved them then, love them now. Am so very grateful that they have enriched and still enrich my life.

Hope you enjoyed the show. I sure did.

It's quite interesting to see how they use their relative advantages. Achilles is taller than Stella and outweighs her by about 20 lbs so he uses his size and weight; she utilizes her quickness and maneuverability to her advantage.

Great to watch them play and have fun, especially when they're no youngsters anymore. The minute you see the mischievous spark in their eyes, it almost feels like having your puppies back. Thanks for sharing the pics and the story.

Were they gimpy the next day? Silly old dogs, just like silly old people, don't realize today's fun is why they hurt tomorrow. Still, so nice to see that play.

That's a good question! We didn't observe any stiffness, they were their usual selves the next day. Their play sessions are short - two or three minutes - by human standards. They are very intense though, they are zoomed in completely on their game and on each other.

Are they used for herding? These dogs absolutely must have a job of some kind. If their human doesn't give them one they give themselves one, often one you don't want.
