      Just Ask Him

      Jake amazes me >
Me and Jake do a lot of running inthe woods and he ended up with an infection on the webbed skin between hispads. A week of human type protocol did nothing to help, so off to the vet we went. We received antibiotics and some disinfectant wipes. They worked great and fast too and I got to learn another interesting thing about Jake. He was required to take 2 capsules in the morning and one at night so we started by inserting them into soft treats. He snatches them out of the air when tossed and they went down (at first). Then he started to separate them in his mouth a lot easier than it took us to put them in the treat and they got spitout. They were slimy then and had to be inserted as far back in his mouth as possible, after the prying of his mouth open with my fingers. Once in there we played the head tilted back waiting game for his swallow reflex to take hold. That worked for a while and was the only way then to get them down until he waited me out and down on the floor the pills went. He would just sit there looking at me as if what are you going to try next. I was ticked off at him and just told him he was either going to eat them or do without. I wasn’t going to pick up the slimy pills off the floor and try again. Jake just looked down at them then at me and then just ate both of them one at time. It never dawned on me to just ask him to eat them. For the last 3 days all I have to do is just lay them on the floor and tell him to eat them. It never hurts to ask first. >

I have found that if I toss it tohim and he catches out of the air it goes straight down but if he picks it upoff of the floor he has to chew it a little and last night I seen some powderon the floor. I think it's a dog'snatural instinct to chew everything and we are the only reason they catchanything thrown at them. It's reallybeen fun watching him develop in intelligence and I can’t wait until the next surprise >>

My old chocolate lab was an artist at separating pills from whatever you chose to hide them in. I tried peanut butter, cheese, rolled up in bread, you name it. She would do good for a day or two and then figure it out. I got tired of playing the lion tamer - prying her mouth open and chucking the pill down her throat and holding her mouth closed until she swallowed them. Finally one day I dropped the pill on the floor and told her "get it" Wonders never cease, she picked it up and swallowed it. You are right, it never hurts to ask

I think a lot of what we do with animals, horses and dogs in particular, works better if we are able to project the belief they WILL do what we ask. That's why my dog always does it for the trainer leading our class but not for me. Same with pills. Such a cute story.
