Raw Feeding Discoveries For Your Amusement

LOL, Oban must think I've lost my mind. After years of hustling him away from Bullheads fisherpeople left on the ground (catfish with sharp spiny things on the head) last night I gave him fish head for supper. They were $2.20 for two at the grocery store and came to 2 pounds, cheaper than the salmon I bought at the raw food place. I should have bought more, they had a nice bit of meat on them.

You've heard the myth that feeding raw gives your dog a taste for blood? Nope, not a myth. This morning I clipped a bit too much off a toenail and Oban cleaned his own blood off the kitchen floor. LOL

Raw fed dogs have smaller poops, less frequent poops, they turn white and disappear in a few days. Unfortunately I'm not seeing that at all. If they disappear then they're doing it before they turn white.

However I do find it entertaining to feed a meaty bone like turkey neck and beets at the same time. Pink poop.

Raw fed dogs have less flatulence and any they do does not smell too bad. Really, I must write Dr. Billinghurst and let him know I have such an exceptional dog. He also says raw fed dogs, he endorses BARF which we are doing, have sweeter breath and I'd rather be kissed by a kibble fed Oban than a raw fed Oban just for the odour.

We are almost done our first month of BARF. On the whole it's going very well. One lovely thing, his coat is nearly all back in and it's never looked so good. Oban was dandruffy with a harsh, dry coat right from puppyhood. The BARF diet does seem to be having a strikingly good affect on his coat. I am definitely a convert, for Oban anyway. The cats like to share, reminds me to get out a couple of little chicken necks for them to have tonight while he chows down on turkey neck.

The things that can amuse dog people....
seriously though, so good to hear Oban doing soo sooo soooo well after his (and your's and DH's!) ordeal in the spring. I wonder if all of this is helping his allergies a bit? I did read you said he was still somewhat itchy, but is it less than he was at the same time of year before the diet change?

Spring and summer will tell for itchies. He has mild itchies but he has never been bad in winter. The new holistic Vet is really hoping as much as we are that he will not be itchy as we suspect it's the allergy meds combined with pain meds that set off the Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
