curious to know how you selected the dog from the rescue? did you bring your other pets to help screen? I have no clue, as I just got a pup and figured I would start from scratch. down the road I might adopt a second dog, thus asking if it was truly just luck or you had a method to your madness so to say.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how well our adoption of Frank is going. It will be three weeks tomorrow. He is really a super sweet dog. He is a cuddler and follows me everywhere. He plays great with Sam although I was unprepared as to how rough two big labs can be! Our only issue so far has been the crate, and this week we have gotten rid of it. This week I had been crating him until the dog walker came and then I had her leave him free in the house. Until yesterday when we decided to give all day a try. We had no issues! Yay! Frank is so funny. He loves to chew his toys on our bed. At any given time, there are 3 or 4 toys on our bed. Sam isn't near as playful as Frank and it makes me wonder if frank's a lot younger. The vet estimated his age at 18-24 months so I don't know. All in all, I'm very happy we adopted. I look at this wonderful loving creature and it breaks my heart to think of him ever being mistreated. He was rescued from a miserable life tied to a tree out in the cold so I know things weren't great for him. Fortunately he seems to have put his past behind and is embracing his new life with us !

I haven't been the animal rescues in TN but I know in NE if you tried to adopt a dog, they wouldn't let you unless you brought your other dogs down there to meet the potentially new family member. The humane society wanted to make sure that all animals got along before they let you adopt.

The answer to this will vary, sometimes a great deal, from rescue to rescue. Not all are created equal and there is a wide range of variety in the process. And a rescue, a shelter and a pound are all very different places.

Big overview of the process - fill out an application, home visit, meet the dog/dog meets your dogs/animal, references, adoption.
The steps can change (rescue I work with you often meet the dog before the home visit, some rescues do references first). There is generally always a meeting between resident animals. Sometimes more than one.

Its actually a funny story how Benelli came into our life and I'm a true believer in the right place at the right time and ment to be. My husband and I were looking at rescues and shelters and it had to be a lab or lab mix and a male. I'm just a male dog lover I've had females but my males were more lovey. I know my dogs and knew I needed a calmer personality for it to work. Some rescues wouldn't even consider us bc we currently have 4 dogs. It was almost 8 months of looking. There was one I fell in love with Hank but after meeting with him I knew it wouldn't work he was a strong personality.

One day I stopped at pet smart on my way home to get cat food. Note I live 1 hour away from this pet smart and very rarely stop at this one. I walked in and they were having their adoption day. I saw him first he was not crated and sleeping I bent down and was like hey buddy. He didn't get up but just wagged the tail. I thought he was one of the rescue ppls so I was looking at the puppies all lab mixes. Arnold was beautiful 6 month old I took him out played with him he was the one I was set on getting until they told me he was a Dane mix way to big for my house he was prob the size of Gauge and was only 6 months.

I got up to leave and something told me to go back to Benelli still sleeping I bent down and was petting him when the rescue person said he could be yours. I was there 1 1/2 hours just observing his reaction to people other dogs walking by I asked if I could walk him around the store and outside.

He was mellow and didn't react meeting new dogs. Filled out the application and when talking to the rescue person she said normally they do checks but she could tell from my knowledge she felt comfortable without the dogs meeting. She also said that I can return him at anytime if things didn't work out.

Introducing to my dogs the only one I was worried about was Gauge. Basically I brought Gauge out and walked them together across the street then brought them in the yard and walked them on leash I then dropped the leashes and kept walking they sniffed then just started playing. My dogs are used to other dogs in the house so this was easy.
