Does anyone let their dog eat deer poop?

My dogs go off leash on the beach and in our yard which are pretty poop-free but not too many other places. When I see my dogs eating deer or rabbit poop when we are in poo-rich areas, I tend to probably overreact a little bit. I know many of you live or take your dogs places where they can run through the woods and fields like "natural dogs". Do you just figure eating poop is part of being a dog and has your dog ever experienced health issues related to such feasting?

I ask because Chase found nice motherlode of deer poop this morning and... well... I'm just wondering.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Mine all lost interest in it once they were past the puppy stages, so it hasn't been an issue. The occasional ingestion when they were young never seemed to hurt anything though.

Poop eating isn't allowed here. Cookie isn't interested in animal poop, but is very interested in human poop (yep, some people use the forest to do their business).

Nothing ever happened to him apart from teeth brushing afterwards. Yuck!

Ha ha! That's probably because mine weren't allowed enough poop as wee pups and now it seems like a delicacy. My dad wouldn't let us eat candy as kids and once I was able to make my own decisions about candy, I can't say I restrained myself for a while there.

When Oliver tries to lick bird poop off the deck or something, I do the "Eww, gross!" all dramatic and then he stops and walks away from it. Maybe that will help?

Poop eating happens. If you are keeping heartworm meds going year round, does that not help with intestinal parasites, what they may ingest with the poo? I thought some brands did.

I don't allow it but it happens occasionally.

It happens. When we go to our property, there is tons of deer poop. If they find it, they eat it. I tell them to leave it, but don't get too stressed about it. They also drink out of puddles and ponds up there, and have never had an issue. I get more stressed out if I catch them eating something or drinking out of a puddle on our walks in the city.

My dogs eat goose poop... it isn't as huge of a delicacy for Sailor now that he's almost out of the puppy stage; but Finnegan has sure taken his place and gobbles it up as quick as he can!
