I have been fostering for about 10 years. The first one is the hardest to let go. I cried for days. But now, I hardly ever do. If I kept them all, I wouldn't have the space to help another who needs me. That's how you have to look at it. There are so many dogs that need good foster homes, it seems never ending. I did keep one of my fosters. He was almost completely blind from juvenile cataracts and had a squirrely temperament. He was sweet, but when he got scared, which happened a lot, he would lash out and bite. I knew we couldn't place him in a home, that if we did, he would eventually be returned for biting someone. So I kept him. I have wanted to keep a handful over the years, that were just amazing dogs, but because I wanted to keep fostering, I let them go. It's a very rewarding thing to do, but can also be heartbreaking at times.
