    doxycycline- need help!

    hi everyone!

I had a question. my friend/coworker has been having all kinds of behavior problems with her catahoula/lab mix, Odie. he's such a sweetheart so this is surprising. he also started having some limb pain a few months back but their vet doesn't "believe" in lyme (??? dont get me started) and so he was never tested.
they switched vets and he got tested and he was a big fat positive. they had his levels checked last night to get a better idea of where he is at, and i guess normal is below 30 and he was 93.
so needless to say they are going to treat with doxy. the problem is, i guess there's a shortage?? the cheapest she can find is $300 for a 3 months supply. she is obviously willing to pay it but would prefer not to, especially since getting his levels checked was almost $200 and she has an appt with a behaviorist next week, whose consult fee is $250.
have you guys heard of this crazy spike in price? where have i been?? anyone know of any way to get it cheaper?

    thanks!

Yes, there was a thread recently about this. I think someone suggested an alternative antibiotic to treat it but I cannot remember what it was. maybe we can both search for it.

Yep, that is actually on the cheaper end for some of the prices I've heard. My sister's vet used minocycline instead, or you can look at compounding pharmacies to maybe be a bit cheaper. Me personally, I'd pay for the doxy b/c I think it is most effective

I just looked this up and yikes! Attached is a link from the American Socity of Hospital Pharmacists (people) which talks of timing, availability and possible substitutes. It looks like no companies of any size are making it anymore which could mean a long term shortage.

but FYI- to anyone else who runs into this- my coworker has been calling all day and fust found it at Target pharmacies for 66 bucks!! i don't know how long that will be the case for but if anyone sees this thread relatively soon and needs it i guess that's the place right now.

Be sure to check dosage strength on the Target pills. That doesn't sound like the typical 100 mg cap. And the amount. Lyme needs a fairly high dose, you know.

A 30 is not normal, but a lot of vets don't want to treat until it's over 30. But, if the dog is at 93, that's not too bad, yet. I've heard of way over 300. I prefer to do it no matter the Quant C6 reading. Just because I don't want it developing into a chronic thing. I have treated a 15 before.

Good for your friend seeking another vet. I cannot believe any vet in your (our) area wouldn't believe in Lyme. SMH.

Good luck, hope it works out.

We have had quite a few positives at the clinic in the last few months. Almost every client has opted for the c6 quant, then treating with doxy if the number was high. One patient is a small poodle mix. $77 for a month of doxy.

i know she looked into the strength and everything at target. she needed 90 pills of 100mg doxy, for 100mg 3x a day. she was supposed to pick up the script today so i hope it went well.
