    So Chili and dog parks

Sat down yesterday at the local dog park with Chili for about an hour. Had a nice chat with a gentleman of a beautiful husky. prior to this sit-down, I had run into this man before and was sternly told his dog was aggressive towards intact dogs. So it was a pleasure to sit and chat. It was also a pleasure to see his 7 year old neutered husky get along with my 11 month old intact chili. It wasn't all lovey dovey, but it was good play without teeth or aggression. after about 20 minutes, chili did start to "hump" so I corrected and took him home...but the conversation we had about neutered dogs vs intact was very interesting...I am a 1st time pet owner so I am interested in all the new dog behavior I see. Chili is pretty laid back and has never barked or showed aggression at the dog park. However a few times he has been harassed by others. Some big dogs like great danes and some little like taco bell dogs. I never knew why...Chili has gotten along with so many dogs...from pit bulls, rotties, GSD, corso's, etc...But I think I finally have a better understanding. Dog parks are meant for neutered dogs only. Its the easiest way not to put any responsibility on the pet owner! I won't be taking chili back to the dog park for a few reasons: its against the law in my area, its a financial risk, too many visitors of the park are vocally in support of the law, the thought of a neutered dog attacking and injuring chili, the attitude that many neutered dog owners have that its my fault/or chili's fault that he is intact thus must be attacked by there dog is ok, etc....

Is there any fact surrounding aggression vs. intact/neutered? I am just wondering if this is a copout for the benefit of the pet populations? Or an easy excuse for the pet owner to blame something else other than themselves?

So I will stick to the walks on leash, I can't argue with state law.

I definitely don't believe un-neutered means aggressive behavior.

I think you're right not to go back to the park

however, I think The Chilidog needs an outlet for off leash time. Do you have somewhere you can let him run? Or swim?

I wouldn't not go back, maybe try an odd time of day. I've met some very well mannered unaltered dogs.

    In the city...NO

the more I research the more I find I can't even take him to doggy daycares. I am missing country life, but I will figure something out.

its the neutered dogs that are the problem :P

You mean are all neutered males aggressive to intact males? No, but a few are. Only a few in our experience.

Yes, there is some research. It's not what you have probably heard but then there is not a lot of research into this yet. Take look here:

    https://saova.org/articles/Early%20SN...20Behavior.pdf

But dogs are individuals and a dog one has problems with might be fine with others. I was really worried about meeting Shadow as he is the only dog other people warned me about at a place we go and three people warned me. Big, black, mean and a humper I was told. He was fine with Oban. But I have seen him act up with other dogs, now that we've met him.

You'll find something. We just moved and I'm in the same boat. Monterey/Carmel is like a retreat for dogs. Moving out East has put a damper on things. Still haven't found a place to off leash hike but I have found a couple of beaches. I hate the dog parks so far. You might be able to find a ball field to go to during off hours. Or as mentioned, try going to the park during weird times so you are there alone. Or with a group you know. I used to go to our park with a play group. Same people same time all vetted dogs and people. No one on phones, no aggression, no problems. Good luck!

Oh and btw, I live with Charlie, neutered, and Burton, not neutered. No aggression. It's not just hormones, it's poor socialization and training. That's the problem.

Due to Chili getting along with so many dogs at the dog park, I feel its not a cookie cutter all neutered dogs hate intact dogs model. But the few neutered dogs that truly pester Chili have owners that don't care and blame chili. The thing that woke me up was sitting down with this gentleman with the husky who shared with me all his horror stories when his husky was younger. And since I am breaking the law bringing chili to the park, its not worth the risk. when a 2 year old great dane/neutered male decided to be aggressive with chili, I could see how even if chili was mauled to death, it would be my own fault(due to the city law).

I don't care for cities either. Is there a reason why Chili's not fixed? Here the licenses are cheaper than an intact dog too, I mean, it pays for itself on that alone. Some people just prefer not to too.
