I really would love a consensus on this issue, you will read articles that will say both ways. We feed from a raised feeder because it makes Bacon less full of burps, and he drinks better.

Dr. Jean Dodds recommends to NOT use a raised bowl. She also lists several other ways to help prevent bloat if the dog or the breed is known to be prone. And some of the recommendations are for any dog.

Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat) in Dogs

However, I know for sure I found another writing from Dr. Dodds where she says the reason not to use raised bowls is because they may promote gulping and air is swallowed along with food. And in the other writing she also says the verdict is out on whether raised bowls are good, bad or or no consequence.

Sorry, I just searched again and cannot quickly find the other writing.

We use this shaped stainless steel ones because Latte flips over the classic shaped bowls.

I use a plastic "brake-fast" bowl for Cori, as she eats too fast. It has the pillars in the middle of it. We have never had any problem with using plastic. I used raised bowls for my GSD who had hip dysplasia. I understand that raised bowls COULD contribute to bloat, so don't use them for my labs. However, I realize there is a lot of opinions about the cause of bloat and no one really knows for sure. It simply makes sense to me though.
