You are competing against a standard and trying to obtain a qualifying score. Three of those and you get your title, regardless of placement. Lots of people shoot for a certain score, whether it's "perfection" or just better than the last time. Depends on your perspective. There is a score sheet, also, and while it's not always easy to get your hands on, it is often possible to at least see it and snap a picture. And, the judges often will chat with you for a moment to at least let you know where things went awry.
