I let Britt do basically whatever she wanted as she got older. Age has its rewards

Great thread! I've never had a senior dog, so I'm paying attention here. Plus, I'm gaining valuable insight and patience interacting with my senior mom and MIL...

All of my seniors had privileges I would have never let my younger dogs have. It's just part of the journey. The seniors earned it.

Having said that Bruce and Sophie enjoy privileges no dogs before them ever had. I think it's because I've learned over the years that the time they are with us is so, so, so short. Also, as I've grown older, and maybe just a little bit wiser, I've come to understand these wonderful dogs love us so unconditionally, I feel a lot different about them. I guess you could say these two benefit from those who went before them.

Oh yes. We took care of my MIL for years and that was an extended Zen moment if there ever was one.

Thea's owner and I chatted on here within the past year about the same thing. Kimber and Thea are birthday twins- June 25, 2005- and both started backsliding in obedience at about 9. DH and I say Kimber is at the "wearing purple and a big red hat" stage: she's an old lady and she doesn't need to put up with anything. I wish her recall was still 100%- it's really an essential command- but I take comfort in that she just kind of ignores me when she's sniffing something. She doesn't run off or wander very far.

Emma is my senior and she currently tells us what to do, to be fair she has always been a bit bossy! I look at every day as a gift and I only want her to be happy and comfortable, for how ever long she is with us. Her smiles tell me that she is good with this.

They get to a certain age, and they think they know better than us. I just let them be. I don't train Grace anymore at 10 but she still has boundaries since she's a big flake.

She knows the stuff. She sounds like such a sweetheart, and has no doubt earned her retirement......
