Some People - Barking Dog Rant

After 20 minutes of shrieking that could break the sound barrier I went over to ask if she, the owner's visiting mother, could please stop the dogs, hers and the resident dog, barking. Before I even got a word out she indicated she Knew why I was there, Knew they were barking, even asked if it was driving me nuts. She agreed the dogs were really bad. So, what, you KNOW how bad they are but you put them out and let them carry on anyway and wait for a neighbour to protest?

But she did bring them in and all was fine till 4:30 when her daughter, the homeowner, arrived home from work, let hers out and it barked for 25 minutes. I went over again. This one claims she just let the dog in because it was barking. Well bully for you, did you not hear it 25 minutes ago when it started? She blamed her mother, said she spoils her Granddog. One other time she blamed her son. Nice eh? Blame your Mum and your own kid. I don't think Mum told her I'd been over earlier.

Sheeeesh. What can you do about people like this? This is the fourth time we've talked about the blinkety blank dog's barking and they don't do anything. They say they have tried all sorts of things but I'm right next door and I see no sign they do anything. Oh wait, this is the family with one kid in prison and another they told he could shoot a restricted weapon off in the backyard.

Animal Control? What are the city/county ordinances on nuisance animals in your area?

That's next. We, other neighbours and I, thought the fact that a similar scenario played out recently with another barking dog that is a bit further away and the By-Law Officer was notified might have had some effect. And it seemed it did till recently. We do have a noise by-law and it does apply to barking.

So dang annoying. When our next door neighbor's Jack was alive, he was a constant yapper but they were very conscious of it and would put him inside if we were out.

Now the neighbor behind us has a barker and all they do is yell "shut up". So far it's been no more than 5 minutes but knowing the kind of neighbors they are, I'm waiting for the day they leave him out all day while they are at work - UGH.

We too have a noise ordinance. I don't mind an occasional bark but to keep it up, unacceptable.

Just wondering, but if animal control does get notified, would the dog get taken away and euthanized? That would be sad if that happened...

Absolutely NOT. Oh, wait, do you mean by animal control? No. But by the owner? Maybe, who knows, the dog seems to be too much effort for them.

No dogs don't normally get taken away unless the owner isn't providing shelter and water. Conditions have to be pretty deplorable for AC to remove an animal and when animals are removed they aren't euthanized just because they were taken. All the shelters I have volunteered at only start euthanizing healthy/non-aggressive animals when they run out of kennels, the ones there the longest are the first ones put on the list if a rescue doesn't step in and take them.
