    Stumped Vet!

We have a four year old black lab. About 4 months ago he started favoring his back leg after intense play. We took him to our vet and was told that he had hip dysplasia and arthritis. He was put on a glucosamine supplement and rimadyl for pain. The issue has gotten increasingly worse over the last couple of months. He is typically okay in the AM but by the evening, he is only using 3 legs and can't get up the stairs or onto the bed. He had X-rays this morning and his hips look great- no signs of arthritis or dysplasia! The vet has NO idea what is wrong w him. Lyme was negative and blood work was normal. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Is he holding that leg up? Could be his knee.

I'd go for an orthopedic evaluation. I'm surprised your vet stated HD/arthritis without an initial x-ray.

Many good thoughts headed your way...welcome to the board and please stick around.

Have they done like a bench test to rule out CCL or partial CCL tear.

You can diagnose arthritis or HD without xrays, so keep that in mind. Your vet kinda wasted your time diagnosing this problem. Go see an orthopedic specialist.

Could be a blow CCL already. It sometimes happens.
Could be a patella issue. Usually the patella will pop back in place, but it could just be getting really stuck.

Did the vet xray anything in the feet? Hock, toes?

Or at least go see a holistic vet. He could be out of alignment in his back and if so, it may be as simple as getting an adjustment. I had one of my oldsters favoring a back leg just 2 nights ago and sure enough, her lower back was tweaked. I was able to massage it out myself. Anne

Lesson learned for me, in the future I won't even bother with having my regular vet do xrays. If they think xrays are needed for any reason, I'll go straight to an ortho vet to make sure they are done properly.
