    Post neuter update

Linus has been neutered for three weeks Thursday.

The pee licking stopped after post-neuter day three.

The jury is out on marking as he's been taking it easy with mostly yard time and modified training class. After his staples were removed, we went to the river. Not a lot of bushes and grass. However, at class yesterday in the potty yard he sniffed for two minutes, peed once (half squat and half mark) sniffed for another minute and then was done. Huge improvement from the dog whose favorite part of training days was hitting the potty yard.

    Yay!

That is a huge improvement! I wonder why some dogs stop the pee licking and others don't. (Maxx) I am convinced that nose work and tracking classes turned Maxx in to a "sniffaholic". He even goes over cars, as he learned in nose work, when he is out and relaxed on a walk. I am very glad it worked out so well for Linus and you!

I'm surprised. I've read it can take up to six months for testosterone from the testes to be completely gone from the body. Of course I guess that means it can take less as well. Good anyway, and sometimes you want to just accept a gift. I know my trainer would probably be jealous.

I think it helps if you Neuter before it because a habit. Hemi has just started this behavior and I really didn't let it go on for more than a month and a half. Hemi stopped this pretty soon after neutering as well.

Glad to hear Linus is doing better.

I think Jeff is right. He hadn't been pee licking very long before the neuter. It was one of the things that made me feel ready to get it done.

I am doubtful the marking will stop as he's been doing it a long time, but I'm hopeful! The potty yard at school is full of intact male and female urine as many of the dogs do conformation and there are a couple breeders not to mention most people alter their dogs between two and three years of age. I think it's pretty irresistible to most dogs. ;-) I will have to report back after a hike or something.

I have had a lot of newly neutered adult male Labs in my house due to fostering for rescue and sometimes the before and after is remarkable and sometimes not so much. But since I only had them for two to eight weeks it's hard to say what the ultimate outcome was. I've heard stories of dogs the neuter really changed and fast (one three year old completely stopped marking after one week) but I'm sure there are dogs who are pretty much the same. I guess there's a lot of factors involved in post-neuter behavior.

The behavior that pushed me over the edge with Maxx was borderline bullying of Emma. It did not go on for more than 2 weeks and that did stop almost immediately. I was extremely happy about that, it was so out of character for him.
