    Bark control devices?

Does anybody have any recommendations or have you had any success using them? Indoor or outdoors. Sailor and Finnegan both bark like crazy when they see other dogs so I've started to research different options. Has anybody had any luck using a whistle?

    Thanks!

Yes. I have a very vocal dog. A bark suppressor collar has kept the neighbors from going mad and calling animal control. If you decide to go this route, don't get the cheap ones at Petco. You can't tell if they are working, batteries unreliable, no variable intensity. For about $100 you can get one from some of the sporting dog retailers on line. It is rechargeable.

Downside: The dogs will learn to "defeat" the collar by learning to squeak just below the collar's sensitivity. That can be annoying. Also, you are not really fixing the problem of a vocal dog through training. I can get mine to hush up by telling the to QUIET, and they do. But with this one who is vocal, I don't want to risk coming home from someplace and having a citation on my door from the authorities.

So, I wish you well. There are remedies out there and this is just one of them.

i had a barker. we finally stumbled on the combination of a citronella bark collar and a Halti (or gentle leader), the one that the nose loop isn't super tight, but isnt really loose either. something about the pressure behind the ears, and the squirt of the citronella, helped immensely. of course, you cant leave the halti on unsupervised, and I don't like leaving anything on them (collar etc) when i'm not supervising, but it helped him. His was a weird thing - it wasn't so much AT anything, more of a stare-off-into-space in front of you, and bark. and bark. and bark..... very occasionally could we figure out what the heck he was on about.

Jake recommends the sport dog bark collar. It is great at detecting the difference between simply a loud noise and your dog actually barking. It can detect the vibration that is made when your dog barks.

I’ve never used one, but my trainer has used a citronella collar for one of her border collies who is an incessant barker, and it was effective enough for that dog that after a few months of using it the problem barking resolved. Her sister (also a trainer and AKC Obedience judge) has a rescue corgi that is incorrigible when it comes to barking and for him she needed to use the electronic kind. I think she went with a Tri-tronics (might be Garmin now) one as she too heard the cheaper ones aren’t very good. It does work, but as someone else said, they learn just how much noise they can generate without being corrected, and for him, if the collar isn’t on reminding him, he will still bark.

Both dogs will quiet if the owner is right there commanding “Quiet” but if the owner isn’t in sight, then all bets are off.

My friend uses this on her rescued doodle dog and it works for her. The reviews are not so great.

This is actually the one I saw in Cabela's, then looked on Amazon when I got home--I was surprised at how back the reviews were! I guess you could always try it out, if it doesn't work return it. :\

Cheap ones are just that--cheap. And they don't work. Get a Sportdog brand--about $100. Works like magic!
