Bacon does the same thing when Jake is gone. He works a lot of overnight and evening shifts, and so Bacon and I spend a lot of time just the two of us. He takes it upon himself to make sure I am safe. Checking every window, protecting the yard with his barks from the squirrels, and being a super velcro dog. I think he thinks that Jake is there to protect me, so when he is gone, Bacon is the protector. Its odd that he doesnt act differently at all when I am gone, just checking the door, and getting excited when a prius drives by the house (I drive a prius )

Amazing - Charlie does the same here.

Charlie has the biggest loudest bark as well. He will run fast to find me..bark, growl, as if "come look hurry."

IT is startling and sometimes annoying -- but I go to him, open the area he is barking at, and I say thank you.

Harper and Jackson both did the same thing when DH was out of town last week. Jackson watched the front door / driveway until we went to bed. He even growled at the UPS guy, who he knows and loves (UPS guy carries cookies). Jackson's tail was wagging, but he was growling softly, as if to say "don't even try to bribe me with a cookie, dude." Harper started her "watch shift" when we went to bed stayed alert until I started to fall asleep. She also had to sleep on top of me, not next to me. Neither of them act like this when DH is home. It took me a while to respond to their barking calmly as well. I live in the woods, so I'm already paranoid enough when I'm home alone. I make sure keep a baseball bat handy nowadays.
