I'm guessing the crumple zones in the Variocage did what they were supposed to do in the case of that recent car crash. I hope mine never get tested like that!
I remember we had a thread on this subject before the board crashed. I think there was only one harness (Sleepypod) that had any kind of testing and like Annette said very expensive crates

I just ordered ruff tough kennels for my jeep to replace my wire crates. Variocage wasn't going to work well with my set up, so these should be a good compromise
I think now there are an additional 2 "seatbelt" harnesses that have been crash-tested, on that sled-thingy, using the child-restraint standards. The test seems to be does the dog stay IN the harness, does the harness stay attached to the seat (car seatbelt), and does the harness keep the dog basically on the seat.
I believe they are the Ruff Rider Roadie, and the Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Harness (not the original Tru-Fit, it has plastic buckles). In fact, i just bought one of these for a friend's BC pup i'm sitting, she had been riding loose in her mom's lap... Scout has the Ruff Rider Roadie, he gets belted into the middle of the middle row of seats in my SUV. I had contempleted a crate for him when i got the truck (my car was a Rio, with no room for a crate), but did a bit of research and decided to stay with the seatbelt.
Speaking of tough crates, a friend had purchased these Ruff Tough Kennels, thinking that with no seams, and no wire/collapsable design, they'd be a safer alternative to a "normal" wire crate or a vari-kennel style plastic crate. They sure seemed heavy duty.
