Dog car restraints are not tested for safety

I had no idea that there are no US regulations in place to require manufacturers to test the doggie seatbelts, carriers, and crates that are intended for vehicle use!

There was a canadian show that did something on dog seat belts. they ended up testing them. I should watch the show one day - from my understanding only one car seat belts passed their test (great advertising for them as many people now go out and buy them!).

I will see if I can find somethign about the show, if I remember correction this is the one that passed: Sleepypod Clickit Utility| Top performing Dog Harness | Dog Safety - Sleepypod® | The safest pet company | Dog Carrier | Cat Carrier | Dog Harness

Aha this is the show: Dog harness crash test results - Marketplace - CBC News

I read an article that showed only the Sleepypod brand were crash rated. I can't remember where but it was the reason I bought them.

There are at least two crash tested crates that I can think of, but both are VERY expensive - in the $1000 range. My friend just downsized her car to a small little hatchback and invested in a variocage (I think the other one is Pro-line?) to give her dog more protection. She is planning to get one for their other car after she pays this one off. Amazon.com: Variocage DOUBLE Crash Tested Dog Cage, Large: Pet Supplies

This is disturbing. Some city/states are requiring that dogs be restrained in cars yet there is so little testing being done. It's like mandating child seats/restraints and them not being tested.

I think as time goes on we'll see more organized safety standards, but right now it's a crapshoot. I think crates are probably the safest way to go if you have room, although wire crates that are designed to collapse probably will do just that in a crash. The most recent crash tests show Gunner crates and the Variocage performed the best in testing, but they are both pricey options.

2 dogs that I know of were in crates that were strapped down in the back of a pick-up truck, truck was T-boned at high speed, crates catapulted out of the truck, down an embankment, broke apart... but apparently absorbed enough energy that both dogs survived. One had a bad concussion.

Crates help. That's all I can say.

A local dog person was just in a very bad rollover car accident. She was banged up pretty badly, her dogs were in the Variocage crate and while they were bruised up some other than that they are fine.

Child restraints are tested for the safety of the child. If you do find safety testing on dog restraints it might very well be concerned only with the safety of the human passengers, not the dog. The dog might get yanked to the edge of a harness thing and not knock out a person in the front but the dog might break it's neck. Or a leg or have severe internal injuries.

LOL ... I know exactly who that is - her and her variocages have been a hot topic on a friend’s (who knows her) FB page lately.
