    Not sure what's going on

Cooper has me really concerned. We had to put his companion to sleep last week, she was 13 and he is 6, so he's never been without her. He was also on prednisone for bad allergies.

I weaned him off the prednisone several days ago...5 or 6...I can't remember exactly. He is still drinking excessively(GALLONS a day) and peeing like a mad man. He is waking me up 3 or more times a night to take him out and he pees for literally a minute or more each time. He can't seem to hold it more than 2 hours and he's whining to go out. He now also has diarrhea. Not totally liquid, but definitely not his normal poop either. His diet has not changed.

I took him for a walk tonight and he didn't even enjoy it. Didn't stop to smell anything, didn't tug, no emotion. I'm sure that he's depressed because he just lays around in the house, too. He won't even come up on the couch or bed by me, he just lays on the floor and the sadness in his eyes is killing me. I take him for car rides and he just lays in the back.

I just don't know if the extra urinating, drinking and diarrhea are related to depression. Can anyone help? He has an appointment at the vet on Saturday, but if there's something I can do to help him sooner I would love to know.

So I just did a web search with his symptoms and it comes up kidney failure. Does sound like the symptoms fit. I will be so heartbroken if I lose him so quick after my Emma!

It sounds more like the pred, possibly mixed with serious stress/depression. Hopefully your vet has some answers.

Don't discount the fact he is in mourning. As you said he's never been without his companion. He was bonded. He doesn't understand why she is gone. Just as it take time for us to mourn the passing of a loved one, it will take time for him to mourn too.

Six years ago my 15+ year old yellow girl Fannie crossed the bridge. My 10 year old chocolate boy, Noah mourned her passing for months. He lived another 2 years, and I'm not sure he ever really got over missing Fannie.

Your vet can't fit him in any sooner, can they? If it was me, I'd be asking them to let me know if they had any cancellations, & let them know you are really concerned about his symptoms. My vet has always been really great about working me in if I feel that my dogs need to be seen right away.....

I'm calling tomorrow to see if they can get him in tomorrow instead of Saturday morning. I'm just so worried. Thank you for your understanding and patience with me.

After Bandit's passing, Melody was very depressed. She actually would sit and howl which made me cry which made her howl more.

However, she never had any other symptoms that I could not blame on depression. Hope you can get him in to the vet tomorrow.

The peeing sounds like predict, and maybe it's still in his system and effecting him. I'm not sure how long it lasts. The rest sounds like mourning. Poor boy.

Mourning a companion can be heartbreaking to watch. I witnessed this when I lost Ozzy 4 years ago, my Emma was a mess. She would not eat, would not play, did not want to go for walks, no joy at all, she just looked so damn sad. Of course we were mourning as well, he was only 8 y/o and it happened so fast, I know she fed off of our grief and shock. She did not begin to snap out of it until we brought Maxx home 3 months later. She was NOT happy at first but she had something new to focus on and within a week she began coming around. Emma has 2 of Ozzy's favorite stuffies that she keeps in my son's bedroom, on her bed. She put them in there herself when Maxx came along!

I would definitely get Cooper in to the vet ASAP, for a check. It may be helpful to put him on an anti depressant for a while, especially if you do not plan to bring another dog in to your home. I do know Maxx was the reason Emma snapped out of her funk and although she likes him she does not LOVE him the way she did Ozzy. She came to my house, with her siblings, just about 5 weeks old and he loved those babies like they were his. Their love for each other was very sweet, I have never had 2 dogs so closely bonded. I feel your pain as I know how hard it was here, hang in there.

The excessive thirst and urination are frightening. The rest could be due to stress and mourning, but I hope you can get into the vet tomorrow to get him checked out. I'm so sorry.
