Allergic to fillers in meds...so frustrating

Another post about Cooper's UTI. The UTI seems to have cleared up after 2 weeks on the antibiotics. This was the 2nd round of 2 weeks on them. The vet prescribed them for 3 weeks, but several days ago I realized that Cooper is itching, scratching and biting like crazy at his feet, tummy and anywhere else he can reach. I searched online for the ingredients in the meds and yep, CORN is a filler. Lightbulb moment! A dog that is allergic to grain can't have pills made with corn. GRRRR

Needless to say, I'm not continuing the 3rd week of meds. He goes in next week to get another urinalysis done. I will be sure to mention it to the vet.

What antibiotics can be used that are grainfree?

Did not even think about that. The vet should be able to help seeking out an appropriate med. Also, try 1-800-Petmeds and see if one of their reps can give you some ideas.

Call the vet to discuss options - maybe a (human) pharmacy can help as well. You don’t want to create drug-resistant infections by stopping the meds too soon if you have any other option. I know with a human med that I am on, various generic brands contain different fillers, so maybe there’s a version of the drug you need that doesn’t use the same filler.

Find a compounding pharmacy. They can custom mix the ingredients to avoid the fillers.

I feel your pain. Fran is allergic to preservatives in canned dog food. Nikki now becomes incontinent because of an ingredient in the linings of cans that mimics estrogen. You wouldn't believe what's in this stuff!

The med he is on is Amox/Clav so basically it's Augmentin. What I could find online, all antibiotics have corn in them as fillers. I will have to research for a compound pharmacy and will surely see what the vet says.

Do your grain free dogs exhibit allergy symptoms when they are on meds? If so, what symptoms and what meds?

Maverick is on Clavamox right now for a skin infection. He's been licking his feet and he has HORRIBLE gas.

Edited to add that the skin infection is open sores under his chin and has nothing to do with his feet.

Boy, what a problem. There must be humans with that same problem, what do they do? I found this site:
