    Hoku ... not purebred Lab?

I just went upstairs, where my 11 year old son was lying in bed, reading. Next to him in bed was Hoku, because she loves lying in bed with her boy.

Between them, on the bed (well, on a plate on the bed), was a half eaten bagel (the boy is a very slow eater). Untouched.

Preoccupied boy. Lab. Unattended delicious food a foot from Lab's nose. Lab ignores. Clearly this is not a Lab at all, but some sort of ... cow or bear or border collie something, in a Lab suit.

... I've posted here before about Hoku's lack of begging or sneaking food. And I appreciate it! But I also have to admit that I'm not really used to this in a Lab. (But I'll take it! I'll take it!)

In other news, she went to her first off-leash dog park yesterday, did really well. A few rough humpy dogs—if the owners don't stop that, I do—but all in all she had, I think, fun. Not as much fun as when she plays with her best friend neighbor dog, but fun.

Hehehe maybe she won't do it cause he's in the room. Daisy feigns her disinterest in our food when we're around, but leave her home alone with, lets say a box of pizza, and she's been known to gobble it all up!

I’m with arentspowell - mine don’t pretend not to be interested, but they wouldn’t touch something if one of us was right there. In the situation you describe, there would be a huge puddle of drool though, LOL.

Most of the Labs I've had a wouldn't touch food in that kind of situation. Now, walk off foe 3 seconds and that bagel would be history!!!!!

No doubt in my mind that Hoku is actually wearing a disguise. Haha. Good for Hoku, Daisy would've eaten that bagel in .002 seconds. I know because she is notorious for stealing food from the nieces and nephews.

Must be from the same defective gene pool as Thor - he doesn't swim or have much of a retrieve drive. I call him my defective lab.

Past Labs I've had / known would snarf something up if you so much as looked away from a second.

We do work w/ Hoku on not going for food on the floor (for instance) unless we release her and say "Ok!" so many that's some of it. I don't know. In general any time she picks something up she'll come to one of us to have us check it to see if she can keep it.

Can you come to my house and work that same magic with Lucy? Lucy believes that any food left unattended for more than 30 seconds is hers!

Maxx won't touch something unless told he can but there is definitely drool! All bets are off with Emma but she has an excuse, she is 1/2 Border Collie! She has been known to remove food if you are looking away or involved in something other than the food.
