This weekend we walked down past our neighbors' horse field. They have a new horse, and New Horse was standing right at the fence as we walked by. Kimber walked along, noting Horse She Already Knows, and then her ears perked up at the sight of New Horse. They locked eyes, and Kimber gave a soft woof. I shushed her and we kept walking. Then just past New Horse, she squatted and did a quick marking pee! We resumed walking and I told her, "I don't think that's a battle you want to pick, missy!"
Kimber grew up around horses and has only shown respect for them, so it was very unusual for her to act out like that. She's highly unlikely to meet New Horse without a fence between them, but I guess she felt she should establish dominance just in case.
