My first 'dog' was a red fox. We had just moved out to the outer boundary of St. Louis and it was like woods everywhere. On one of my trips out to discover this new world I found a pup by itself. Brought it home and my mother and I nursed it to health. When my parents realized it was a fox they said, I could keep her because she was so imprinted to me and I to her. She slept in my bed. I fed and groomed her-she was my buddy until she ran out into the road to chase a rabbit and a car hit her.- I was devastated and so was the driver of the car. I can still remember that day so clearly.

And the story continues to this day. I am an animal person!! And thank God for that.

As an adult there was very little I wanted more than my own dog, but work hours and renting just made it unfair to any potential pup, so we waited and waited until the right time. We finally bought our own place, but were still gone at work from ~6 to 6 every day. Finally, both of us started working from home and I went on the search for a breeder and eventually ended up with Thor. He's the first in what I think will be a long life of labs. But I'm so glad we waited until we had the opportunity to really spend time at home raising a puppy. I'm sad I missed out on so many years of having a dog, but I couldn't imagine trying to raise a lab puppy while working that schedule!
Dudley was adorable...reminds me of a little lion.

We had a German Shepard named Daisy when I was very little, not sure what happened to her. We got a hairy mutt named Fuzzy when I was about 8, then an Irish Setter puppy when I was 13. I joined the USAF when I was almost 19. Went to the UK when I was 25. It was there I got Ella, my first Lab.

    good question!

We had dogs growing up. There was a beagle, not sure what age I was (we had her maybe 2-3 years?) I remember getting Oopee (cocker spaniel-lab mix)when I was in grade 3 and we added Dryfuss the lab/golden mix when I was in grade 12 (Oopee was still around) and Dryf didn't pass away until Rocky was in the picture. I was living without a dog during my post secondary education though (that was 4.5 years) though Dryf was at home so still a "presence" in my life.

MY first dog I was...24? 25? I lived on campus during school, as soon as I graduated I found a dog friendly apt and got a dog. I think I moved in end of August and Rocky came along by October (there was some time there to find the right "male chocolate lab" and then get him transported to me. So I held off during my studies. Almost too bad as though I wasn't necessarily financially ready to live off campus and get a dog, i had lots of TIME for one.

I grew up with Meme and did have sole responsibility for her in her last few years of life, but I just got a Chi mix puppy this past September at 20 years old and I'd consider her my first dog. Not gonna lie, I've had a LOT of moments where I was close to taking her back to the shelter, but it has gotten easier. Chihuahuas are not known for being the brightest bulbs in the box, so housetraining was long and frustrating and she's had a new medical issue pop up almost every month since I've gotten her. So I've had a lot of financial struggles due to vet visits which added to training issues. Our relationship was very strained for several months and with newly diagnosed anxiety problems, my emotions were everywhere. I do wish I would have waited several more years to get my first dog when I would have my finances together to get the breed I really wanted, but alas, here I am. I do love her and I'd be distraught if anything ever happened to her. I will definitely never get another small breed again and I would like to stick with going through breeders in the future. I've definitely learned what I need and want in a dog now that I've gone through all of this, so I guess that's good
