We have! I went to a mini-seminar for barn hunt (rats) a few months ago. It was really fun! You should try it. I will go back to it when Linus is retired from other stuff, but not limited physically.

The dogs pick it up pretty quickly. I can't remember all the dogs in my group, but they all started out kinda "meh" about the rat (except the terrier of course!) and by the end they were all nuts. Linus snapped at the rat. He also roughed up the tubes because he wanted to retrieve them. It clearly awakened something in him as he has treed two squirrels since then and prior to that experience he'd always ignored them.

Tux has his RATO (Open Title) in Barn Hunt, and one Q towards Senior. Unfortunately he started having some arthritic issues, and all of the climbing involved at the Senior level was starting to bother him, so I decided to retire him. We still sometimes drop in to practices to visit with our friends and find rats that our trainer hides down low. I have no doubt he would have his Senior title and possibly beyond if it weren't for the troubles with the climbing. He got his Novice and Open titles within like 3 trials, he loves it and is really good! I finally found his talent, lol. He has also gotten High in Trial quite a few times. The people we have met through the sport have been amazing as well.

My friends that do it have a blast! Nothing quite like watching a dog in their element! I feel like there is some instant gratification as well (for the humans) as many dogs title and move up the titles quickly. Compared to many sports, there is not much training involved, saving time, money and frustration.

For Novice literally the only requirement is jump on top of a hay bale that is only one hay bale high. And no rats can be hidden that are elevated. In Senior the climbs are a lot higher, and the rats can be hidden anywhere including way up high.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but are they hunting for real rats? Tanya, I love the photo of Rocky with his ears flapping in the breeze.
