I wonder about this exact same thing. Yesterday we got home and we had to call out for Charlie to tell him that we were home, then he ran downstairs.

we thought we would never be able to leave Charlie out of the crate, he was about a year and half before we tried. We blocked off stairs and closed all doors.
Now we don't block off the stairs and leave the master bedroom open, and that is where he sleeps sometimes during the day. Sometimes I walk in the house and Charlie then wakes up and he gives me this look as to why did I interrupt him!

Way to go! I can't wait to ditch the crate either but a common joke around here is, "We'll wait until he's ten."

So funny! That's how it goes at our house, too.

We've only had Bogey since the beginning of February. We haven't closed the door to his kennel in over a month now and I let him and Misty have free roam of the house when we're away (which is usually for an hour or so on weekends--they go to work with me). I'm thankful that Bogey isn't a chewer! Chico was awful when he was Bogey's age. We still have the kiddie gate up to separate two bedrooms so the cats (if they need) can escape from the dogs, but more often than not all four animals are in the living room when we return from our errands.

Interesting side note: I've been working on off-leash stuff with Bogey at home in the front yard. Our neighborhood is very quiet, few cars and we're at the end of a long dead end, so only get neighbor cars and delivery vehicles. Anyway, this morning I had DH take the dogs into the office as I had a doctor's appointment. He allowed them to jump from his SUV and walk off leash to the office front door (I've been skeptical of doing this with Bogey). Well, DH informs me that Bogey, upon realizing his freedom, ran halfway down the parking lot, turned and came back, went up onto the lawn to sniff around and when DH said "come" both dogs ran to him at the front door. This is such a turnaround from the few times Bogey got out and ran down the street! It is so much better having a calm dog!

Luna does the same thing. DH or I open the door and she just looks at us from her spot on the couch armrest. She hears a knock or anyone walking up the stairs and she is sitting right in front of the door, tail wagging so fast you can't even see it. They're so funny.

If you want some extra amusement in your life, try spying on them using something like the Presence by People Power app which can be set to be motion-activated. I often set up my ipad to spy on my guys (they are both left loose in the house together when I'm gone). Basically, I've learned that when I'm out their main activities involve deciding where to sleep (Dog beds? Hardwood floors? Inside one of the two open crates?). There is the occasional foray to the water dish, some antler chewing, and then Raj likes to look out the window occasionally (Reign never looks outside, but will be the first to bark like Cujo if he hears any little thing!), but basically it's snore, snuggle, repeat. When I come home mid-day, and in the evening, they both grab antlers/toys and shove them at me, as if to say, "Look, we've been so busy gathering these things for you! LOOOOOOK!!!!" :-)
This made me laugh because it describes Burton perfectly! Every morning when I let B out of his crate he grabs everything he can shove into his mouth and wiggles all over the house until he makes it outside to potty. Once he snuck into the cat's room and gathered several cat toys in his mouth. You know he has something because he is usually a mouth breather, and if his mouth is shut, there's something inside he isn't meant to have. Every time someone comes to the door, he barks and then takes off to grab his blankie and greets whoever it is. He is so cute, everyone loves his bouncy and happy personality. My in laws were just here for the weekend and they sure get a kick out of him LOL! Though I don't think they love having him dragging his blankie up and down the stairs, wrapping it around their feet as they are trying to maneuver around him on the staircase LOL! They can't help but laugh though.

I downloaded the app you mentioned on to my ipad, but it would only work with an iphone, and I have android :*( booo!

You'll have to try and get video of Burton with his blankie. Raj does that with the gross towel I leave by the back door to wipe their feet. Gross. I wonder if Burton likes to sleep under the drapes (if you have curtains in your house). Raj gets into the curtains and uses them as a blanket. It's a little annoying (the dog hair on the curtains increases exponentially when he does this), but also cute.

Ugh, with the app not working on Android. This is why I am scared to leave my Apple products! I'm sure there is an Android-compatible equivalent that probably works better...lol.
