When I was looking for a house, I avoided HOA's with a passion. Some of them say no dog at all, some restrict the breed (no pitbulls) and even how tall and what kind of grass your yard can have. I didn't have a pit bull at the time but there was no way some busybody on my block is going to tell me what kind of dog I can have.

It's not being enforced, hence why we are rule breakers. If they did try to enforce it on us, as much as it would kill me to do it because I'm very against this in general but I would probably just claim she's my husbands emotional support dog and seek an accommodation. However, I don't think it will ever come to that. Three out of the five members on the board have pets in violation of the deed restrictions and the other two think the restriction as written is stupid/too restrictive.

The rationale behind changing it (or at least trying to change it) kinda goes back to the fact that there are already so many people (both renters and owners) with pets bigger than 20 lbs and it's not really an issue. The consensus at the meeting seemed to be that small dogs can be louder, more obnoxious, and more aggressive than bigger dogs and all its really doing right now is turning away renters and buyers that would like to be in our community but back out when they see the restrictions.
