There's a mysterious sound in my yard and its freaking me out!

About two nights ago, I was walking Lily around in the backyard when I heard a strange sound. It's hard to describe but it's a whoosh sound that kinda sounds like the friction of a rope or a zipper. It sounded like it was coming from a spot in the ground. The dogs didn't seem alarmed but it freaked me out so I picked up Lily and went inside.

The following morning I heard the sound again, twice. I thought maybe it could have been the neighbors drawing their blinds but when I looked, there was no one near the window.

Last night I made Hunter come and check it out with me. We heard it again twice. He couldn't figure out what it was either. It freaked him out too because it sounded like it was coming from a spot in the ground but we couldn't see anything.

So this morning we come out in the daylight and hear the sound again. Still coming from the same spot in the ground but there is nothing there! We grabbed a shovel and removed some of the grass but all that was underneath were worms. We heard the sound one more time as we were poking around with the shovel but couldn't figure out what's making the sound.

Any ideas? If Hunter hadn't heard it too I'd probably think I was losing my mind.

Is there a waterline there...perhaps with a rupture, allowing rush of water? The storm drain on the side of our property has collapsed twice...we've had sinkholes, actually. I'm thinking a waterline for you....or sewer maybe...you hear what toilets flush?

You were right! We went back out and carefully dug around some more (we were pretty convinced some animal was going to jump out and bite us). It was a buried sprinkler head. It appears the sound was it trying to push water out and nothing was coming out. They are supposed to be on a timer so I'm not sure why its making the sound right now. Will have to contact the property management company about it.

Those type of things really spook me with DH working at night. Glad you found out what it was and not an animal in distress.

One time while camping heard some really weird sounds. Turned out to be deer; they can make some of the oddest sounds.

DH and I were standing in the yard playing with Mocha when I heard a sound. I have to identify sounds. DH said, it's water sinking into the ground. Sure enough, upon closer inspection that's exactly what it was. Glad you figured it out.

I heard a strange sound one night watching TV. It was off and on and very faint. I finally figured out that Mocha was dreaming and ever so slightly moving his foot against the laptop that was laying on the floor. His nails were barely scratching the lid. I usually chalk up strange noises to either the house settling or cat
