Back From Dog Scout Camp 2016

Sorry it took a week to post this. I got back and been swamped, just works stuff and life stuff. Plus I had to go through all the pictures.

It was another great Dog Scout Camp Week. We earned 6 badges. Scent Discrimination, Advanced Scent Discrimination, Rally, Rally Advanced, Dance Troop, and Hunt Retriever.

The Badges below, missing Advanced scent it is a new badge and coming from the manufacturer.

Hemi in his Uniform, he is not happy, I won't let him go swimming he needs his picture taken. This doesn't have his new badges on yet.

However don't let his sad face get you down. Every single night we were met with a deep sleeping lab. I always shower at night so I can wash the sweat and grime off before climbing into bed. Often I would get back to the RV and find he put himself to bed and he wasn't getting out even to greet me. However, every morning was, come on dad lets get going.

Dance Troop, oh yeah we did it. There were 12 dogs and handlers in our troop and we all did a choreographed dance. Yes there is video and no I am not sharing I forget what the song was, something by NSync I believe. We were all also color coordinated. Hemi and I in our dance uniform. I had a bandana too.

Scent detection, anyone that does it for fun should be able to pass it, for Hemi and I it was a breeze. Advanced Scent was a lot harder. We just barely passed the last day. You had to find 2 different scents in 2 different building. That was easy, Hemi has 4 scents he works. The last part was 2 people outdoors walk off 50 ft, one of them has the scent. After 50 foot they plit and go about 20 ft in opposite directions. Now the dog has to find the scent on the person. This is very hard because Hemi and I never trained the Scent could actually be on a person. I mean you usually hide the scent. Firs time Hemi tried he went out and kept circling 5 ft away from the person. He knew it was there but he never though to look for it on the person. So we did a crash course on finding scents on people. Luckily he passed the last day. No good pictures of Hemi scenting.

Hunt retrieve, there were several parts to this. The part I though would be hard was easy, the part I thought would be easy turned out to be very hard. Land Retrieves and Blind retrieves, I thought was going to be hard. Basically, they person with the gun, while Hemi and I aren't looking throws the bird out in tall grass, then fires the gun, Hemi has to go find it. I thought this would be difficult. Nope Hemi smelled it right out and brought it right back to me and handed it to me. The Hard Part was the Water retrieve. I swear that boy is drawn to water like stink to a skunk. The problem with the water retrieve which shocked everyone as Hemi has a Awesome stay normally. He has to stay while the gun is shot and the bird thrown in to the water. Then he goes and gets it when I release him. Nope, the second that bird left the persons hand, even if they were winding up to throw it he was off and in the water. We really had to work on his stay by the water. We really got it by luck I think. Need to work on that some more.

    Land Retrieves, Dead Bird Hemi.

Bringing back the bumper, hard to see the duck wings on it.

    Water retrieve.

We did some more work on his biking badge. Only 20 more miles and he gets that badge. Should have this by September. That's the springer bike attachment I mentioned in another thread. Makes biking with a dog easy.

Then we won first place in the Talent show. We did the Return of Hans and Franz, we are here to pump you up. The Hemi workout.

The Hemi and I did some dancing, we won First place in the Canine Musical Freestyle contest.

As always we will be going back again next year.

    Jeff and Hemi
