    Happy Gotcha Day, Gabe--Another long one-sorry

    5years ago today. I drove for 3 hours, not knowing what I would find at my destination of a shelter looking for a good dog to try to help fill a giant hole in my heart from just losing my Cracker 2 weeks earlier.

    All the time I keep wondering if I got another dog would it be a betrayal to Cracker or was I getting another just to have a dog in the house. The silence of the previous 2 weeks was horrible and I was hoping I was not 'jumping the gun' just to get another.

    When I got to the shelter, talked to the great people inside and told them who I was(I had emailed them Sunday night) and went outside to look at this dog I picked out. My heart was pounding so hard and tears streaming down my face. One of the ladies pointed out My Dog. He had his nose stuck thru the wire pen so hard he had worn a sore on the side of his nose. They asked if I would like to take him out for a walk and get acquainted with them. So they put on a slip-on leash on him and handed it to me and he came over and leaned on my leg and looked up at me with those big, clear beautiful brown eyes.

    We walked around for about ten minutes as I went thru my mental checklist of what I wanted in my next dog and he fit perfectly.

    They named him "Cadet" because he was untrained, one year old and seemed to know where he was going. We stopped walking, I looked at him and said "your name is now Gabriel" and you are My Dog.

    He saved my from my horrible grief of losing Cracker and thru the support of the wonderful members here I now have this great companion, friend-My Dog GABRIEL.

    So glad you and Gabe found each other! Our hearts have a way of expanding to admit the love of a new dog, even while grieving the loss of another. Gabe must be a special boy to have caught your eye and your heart that day. Happy Gotcha Day, Gabe! Wishing you many good years ahead! (And no more escaping, ornery guy!)
