Sorry I can't help with coverage. I received an email the other day from AARP. I wonder if you could use the discount? Pet insurance offer for AARP members | Petplan
Bleh - as some of you know I made a post about Petplan and how they changed underwriters. Their premiums for me have gone up considerably. For Charlie who is 8 coverage would more than double for less coverage - lame. I live in CA so I am currently paying $832 which would jump to about $1600 give or take depending on plan.
I've thought about just canceling both polices on the dogs, but I'm too chicken. You know as soon as I do that something costly will happen and I will be kicking my self. I really have pet insurance for very expensive situations.
Sooo if I decide to stay with Petplan. How should I choose my deductible? You can choose your plan now. If I'm just wanting to go with emergency coverages or specialists should I go for a higher deductible? I just don't know what the best choice would be so I'm not getting ripped off.
Thanks
Nancy
Oh and choosing another insurance company would have both boys with pre-existing conditions. When I signed up with Nationwide they said both boys had skin allergies (um no) and that anything related to skin would not be covered. Charlie had about 5-6 pre-existing conditions and Niner had 2.

Nancy, I feel your pain. All insurances (car, house, major medical) are a rip-off and probably always will be.
Have you thought of talking to your vet? Many sell a brand of insurance (read here kickbacks) but also
they see first-hand the kinda claims ($) at their office.
You could try talking to your personal insurance agent, no, he won't sell pet insurance but may be better
at explaining how things work, higher deductibles, etc.
Good luck with your decisions.

Could you decide what you could afford to pay per year to Petplan for both boys, and just work backwards and pick your plan based on that?
Hi Nancy, for what it's worth we have Healthy Paws for the two of them. We have an 80% reimbursement after an annual deductible of $250. It costs 36.86 per month for each dog so about $73 for the 2 of them. You kind of have to back into the deductible, the higher the monthly, the lower the deductible and vice versa. I figure I can handle the $250 but would then need the coverage. If only I'd had this before Anthony ate the rope instead of after.:-).

So I have changed my tune on pet insurance in the last few months and have joined the "i rather pay (waste money) and never need it than need it and move have it". But like you, premiums here are so expensive (I sigh at those with yearly fees under $800!! I wish).
I would really consider the higher deductible. For me I need help with stupid expensive things like the last few months with Penny. Especially had she lived and we continued to investigate the cardiac issues, we were looking at $3000 in diagnosis and specialists (aside from the cost of her being in the ICU on a heart monitor and drugs which let me say, is expensive). I was still paying off the $4500 surgery from June 1. My friend's dogs has some re-occuring mild health issues and ANY diagnositic works will run them into 3000-5000+++ (MRI to see if it's neurological, could be cardiac so more tests there... because they really don't know). No saving account would truely help here. well i guess maybe but you'd need a whole lot of savings.
Anyway, i will need to cost out if it's worth it paying more premium and a lower deductible so you in theory claim more often (Ex: dogs gets quilled by a porcupine runs about $500 here - based on a few friends that have done it). A night at the ER (non ICU) for monitoring (say for possible blockage) is $300-900. So I'd be out those costs if I went with a high deductible. Hard call. But I want at least unlimited coverage for diagnostic/treatment (including rehab therapies) for the bad stuff.
Sadly I was playing around with the quotes and labs seem to be one of the more expensive breeds to insure (at last with some insurance - who say they cover everything even breed known issues as long as the dog isn't presenting symptoms). I guess that is where you run into issues where you do'nt pay "a lot more" but then they say they won't cover breed genetic issues.

I dropped Petplan and I am in the process of finding something else. I cant the afford the increases and I do not see the point in paying for a plan with a ridiculous deductible and higher premiums for 4 dogs, all under 8 years old, who are all healthy with no pre existing what so ever
See I would do that Lezlie but my dogs do have some pre-existing conditions. And apparently with Nationwide my dogs have pre-existing conditions that they don't lol. Let me know what you decide to go with. I don't get Petplan at all. They are way more expensive now than others and for less coverage.

I have decided to go with FIGO pet insurance. It's a new one which I may regret, but like what I see so far. Customer service has been awesome and I've read good reviews about them. However I am faxing medical records and I am going to discuss pre-existing conditions. I have 30 days to cancel the policy for a full refund. I had never heard of FIGO. Today I was getting my hair cut and there was a vet clinic next door. They recommended FIGO to me and they had done some research on pet insurance. I looked into it and like what I see, but again I have to have them review the medical records to see what's covered what's not.
